New library service to help Scots trace family trees
Nov 28 2008

A NEW initiative which will help Scots to trace their family tree back to the 1500s through their local library has been launched.

People can now pay cash over the counter at a library and get credits to search historical documents on the ScotlandsPeople website.

Previously they had had to pay for these credits on-line using a debit or credit card.

And while on-line subscribers to the ScotlandsPeople website will get 30 credits for £6 those paying the same amount at a library will get 60 credits.

Culture minister Linda Fabiani said: "The ScotlandsPeople partner organisations have worked closely with the Scottish Libraries Information Council and local authorities to ensure this great facility is available in public libraries throughout Scotland.

"It will give people with an interest in their family history, but who may not have easy access to a computer, the opportunity to use the best family history website in the world.

"Easier access to this information will allow more Scots to understand who they are and where they come from."

The ScotlandsPeople website holds digital images of Scottish birth and marriage records dating back to 1553, as well as records of deaths going back to 1855, open census records from 1841 to 1901 and wills and testaments from 1513 to 1901.
