The bank portrays an African American man riding a mule that, when pushed, throws the rider over it’s head as the coin goes into the bank. Displayed a violence against blacks that was acceptable at the time, and was also thought of as “fun”.

I still laugh at this one. I don't know what is more offensive. That monkeys are thought of as blacks or that people are that stupid as to think it's only racist to have blacks portrayed as monkeys.

There used to be a restaurant in Macomb, IL, called "Sambo's." Yes, a family-style restaurant (think of a generic Denny's), and the secondary dining area had a mural of the 'Little Black Sambo' story on the coffered ceiling! No-one seemed to mind, back then! The place changed hands (and names) many times, and the last time I visited Macomb, it had become a family-owned Mexican place.

BTW, this may be one of the greatest threads ever! :D
