I should visit Baku, definitely.

with the money coming from oil+natural gas to Azerbaijan, the Turkish construction companies are quickly building a new Dubai-like place in there. Thats quite an improvement from the recent times of communism era in 1991.

A friend of mine was very recently in Baku, and said that the city constructions and open spaces are very impressive, but the rest of the city outside the center is mostly slums and soviet blocks and that a great majority of the population lives in poverty while it's only the financial elites who enjoy this infrastructure. How much truth does this hold?

First of all there is no "slums" in Baku. :D

The city naturally has many Soviet blocks for obvious reasons, you will find Soviet blocks even in center of Moscow. They are being replaced by new constructed high-rise buildings, and there is really alot of them and all the time new ones are popping out. So I would not only call it something only happening in the center. :rolleyes:

That is again not really true, Azerbaijan has the lowest povery rate among Post-Soviet countries together with Russia and Kazakhstan. Surely the living standards should have been much better for majority, but thats a bit harsh word.

There are only few districts that maybe could fit the discription of not so "improved", but you can find it in Moscow, Istanbul and so on aswell. Districs like Ahmadli, Bailovo are still not that improved.

Actually this is quite normal Absinth because they are independent only since 1992 and Russians leeched whatever they had before that. They leeched their oil and everything but gave nothing besides ugly proletarian blocks, russified names and russian language education by force.

Thats how the communism works. Most of the former commie states are like this except the very low populated small ones. Bulgaria, Romania are an example for that commie illness. Actually Azerbaijan is doing great for the recovery. I am sure they will be much better than some ex-commie European states in few years of time thanks to the oil+natural gas resources.

People who was told to leave their homes were paid a good amount of compensation. The demolition of houses was/are connected to general city plan, had no relation to Eurovision, that process still continues. The people who are told to leave their houses get more than enough money to buy a completly new house (instead of the old Soviet blocks they live in). The reason why they object are because of central location of these houses.

The ugly commie blocks must go as quickly as possible, so i support Azerbaijani government for that but i also understand the people who owned it because probably they were thinking about earning even more money with it if the residents was in central location.

with that speed of constructions, probably Azerbaijan will be the first ex-USSR state who gets rid of all the ugly commie blocks. For example, when i was in Sofia, Bulgaria two years ago, there was a lot of old commie blocks everywhere in the city. I don't know the rest of former USSR countries tough.

BSBG was invited to participate in a limited entry competition for a Mixed Use Development, located on the Caspian Sea shoreline. The brief called for the provision of 100 exclusive apartments, waterside villas, a 100 key boutique hotel and retail space. The reclaimed site, protruding out from Baku's bay shoreline, provides a unique seaside setting with amazing views back across the water to the city.

Whilst the site is split into phased construction blocks, the concept is tied together by a central, raised public plaza which connects the scheme into an existing adjacent park. Beneath the plaza all car parking, service and back of house facilities are hidden, allowing for pedestrian circulation above and through the site. Modern buildings, hovering above the pedestrian thoroughfares, reach out from the site, connecting living spaces to the sea and private marina facilities. A perimeter public promenade, lined with trees, restaurants and cafes, activates the water’s edge and provides a destination point for local and international visitors.

Baku Olympic Stadium goes to Tekfen Construction

Tekfen Construction adds another important project to its portfolio in Azerbaijan, where the company has succesfully completed a number of significant projects since 1996. The company signed a USD640 million agreement with SOCAR, for the construction of the 68 thousand seated Baku Olympic Stadium slated for completion within 24 months, in March 2015.

Eversendai bags RM87m Baku project

Eversendai Corp Bhd has secured a project in Baku, Azerbaijan, worth RM87.3 million (USD 28,5 million) through its subsidiary Eversendai Engineering LLC, Dubai.

The project involves the supply, fabrication and erection of structural steel-work for an office tower development named the Crescent City.

The Malaysian Reserve had earlier reported Eversendai plans to expand its operations to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries in anticipation of the region’s expected growth, singling out Azerbaijan as an entry point.

The project is expected to be completed by August 2014 and will contribute to the earnings of Eversendai for financial years 2013 to 2014, the company said in a statement issued yesterday.

“The structural steel works contract that we have secured for the Crescent City is first phase of the Crescent Development Project in the capital city of Baku,” said executive chairman and group managing director of the company AK Nathan in the statement.

Among the risk factors affecting the Crescent City project include execution risks such as availability of skilled manpower and materials, changes in prices of materials, and changes in political, economic and regulatory conditions.

The work on the project, which was awarded by the developer Gilan Holding LLC, to the company will start this month.

The Crescent City project includes an office tower which has 41 storeys. The work includes connection design, preparation of detailed fabrication drawings, raw material supply, fabrication, blasting, primer, application of cement fireproofing, installation of the structural steel works, supply and installation of composite metal decking required for the Crescent City Project.
