A Tasmanian Coles contractor has come under fire for a job advertisement banning Indians and Asians from applying

Cleaning contractors for the Eastlands Shopping Centre supermarket in Hobart published an ad seeking cleaners on the Gumtree website on Sunday, the Mercury reports.

The ad read: "Store requires no indians or asians please", and added that applicants "must speak English".

The discriminatory criteria sent social media into a flurry, with one Facebook user suggesting a store boycott.

The supermarket giant said the ad was posted by a small contractor responsible for cleaning the store and was done "without Coles' knowledge".

"We were extremely concerned to learn of the ad and its contents," Coles spokesman Jim Cooper told the newspaper.

Mr Cooper said Coles had reminded the cleaning contractor "in no uncertain terms" that it is an equal-opportunity employer.

The case may be taken up by the Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commission and charges could be laid on the contractor – and Gumtree for publishing the ad.

"It's unlawful to blanket preclude a person because of their race," Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Robin Banks told the Mercury.
