Post some redhead examples of your ethnicity.

What do you think, are they legacy of the Celts?

Also, do redheads generally tend to have more Western phenotypes wherever they appear, even if they are from East Europe? Or not?

I don't know for any redhead Bulgarian celebs, but I know a few redhead ordinary Bulgarians. It's rare though.

Redheads are very rare in Greece, but in my lifetime I have met some natural redheads. One was a ginger with blue eyes, curly hair and freckles. Others were more like, auburn or strawberry blonde with less obvious ginger traits :p It's rare, but it does exist.

Fortunately rufosity is not that uncommon among White Brazilians as many of you may think. It is more common among women than men, and it's usually found in people of Western European background, ranging from Germany to Gallaecia. It is also common among Ashkenazim girls. In my family we have two gingers: my grandfather and a cousin, both on the Scottish side of the family. My sister has a reddish brown hair, bur it is not ginger.

The typical combination of the Nordic race: tall stature, dolicho-
kephalie and pale complexion is extremely Yugoslavian language areas
rare.
H. in the northern Croatian areas, we find a fairly closed
dolichoiden small type, with light eyes, blond hair with red component
and snub nose, which I liked called "Zagorjanertypus."
by Lebzelter

That's what I'd say, blonde hair with red component is present, but trully red not much.
I posted some relatives that would prolly respond to the above described type, and one which is true ginger.

What do you think, are they legacy of the Celts?

I doubt red-head people with non-Celtic ancestry are the legacy of the Celts. It's more genetic mutation than anything. For instance, The Udmurt people have the most red-headed people in the world and they aren't known for being descendant of the Celts.

Also, do redheads generally tend to have more Western phenotypes wherever they appear, even if they are from East Europe? Or not?
You can find redheads everywhere in Europe and even outside Europe, but they are more common in Western Europe (British Isle, for example). But again, they aren't common even in British Isle in comparison to Brit/Irish with non-red hair.

Anyway, an example of Pole from SW Poland with redhead:

I noticed a red haired is often the result of a mixture of a black/brunette haired and a blonde individual. Is this right?

According to Professor Jonathan Rees, whom conducted a study in the University of Edinburgh, he concluded that the root for Redhair is found in the 16th chromosome under the MC1R gene. Hence product of genetic mutation, ergo recessive.

Here's an article:
http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/StudentJournal/Mutation.pdf

Though, in order to assure that Redhair is submitted to the generations to come from two Redheaded parents, it is substantially aleatory for people to have it, even if the offspring of a family was descendant of yet-after generations of Blonde and Brunette progenitors.

Post some redhead examples of your ethnicity.

What do you think, are they legacy of the Celts?

Also, do redheads generally tend to have more Western phenotypes wherever they appear, even if they are from East Europe? Or not?

Does auburn hair can be divided into red hair? My wife has auburn hair.

We have quite a few read heads, dark auburn with such thick hair too. It goes either Germans married to Hungarians or to Irish persons to pair up these red recessives. Does anyone know if they were born red or turned ginger over time up to 3 yrs. of age???? It tends to come out about every 2 generations so we have plenty of gingers running around happily.

One my friend in Karachay was blue-eyed blond. It was very funny - Russian guest (me) is a brown-eyed brunet, the so-called "churka" is a blue-eyed blond. :) But never saw there redheds.

Its because they are almost non-existent in Russia. Only some Finno-Ugric and Caucasian minorities have some. But their numbers are negligible.

As far as my Portuguese side goes, I can't think of any examples that are famous but I know a redhead Portuguese woman in person :D

Where I live, in central Portugal, we have an average of about one per class and a class is about 30 kids, so that makes something like 3%.
When I was a primary school pupil, back in the village, we had that average made out of a 3 brothers and sister set in one classroom (4 years together), their nickname was "Ruços" (do not mistake by Russos, that means Russians), “ruço” is something like colorless (the effect of leach), it usually is commonly applied to very light blonds (uncommon here but about the same % as redheads or less) and it’s not derogatory but in those days beeing red head was worst than beeing fat, bullying was their fate...
Just like blonds, here it's uncommon to see grown up (adult) red heads.

Here are 2 of my daughter cute girlfriends, last year.

So are the rest of the so-called red-headed Americans I see all the time. Red hair dye seems to sell like hotcakes here.

For example this girl:

http://sillygrrl.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/091023-red3.jpg

"I decided to be good and stick with my budget and that means no expensive trips to the salon. I grabbed two boxes of color ( L’oreal Superior Preference, Intense Copper Red RR07) last night and did it myself. It’s much more difficult now that my hair is getting long. Doing my roots went OK, but I was nervous when it came to coating the ends and managed to fling color everywhere in the process. I’m pleased with how it turned out though! I still want to grow my hair another four inches, so I may head back to the salon then."

The thing here in the South is that it happens to gingers the same as to blonds. Many children are born that way but they can go as much as dark brown and no freckles once they're grown up, specially males. Women seem to retain it much better, although even for them it's hard to keep the light fire tone of childhood. They tend to end up as auburn or reddish brown.

I found this really interesting blog with all sorts of information on red hair. It is very long but very informative.

It is a myth that Vikings brought red hair to Ireland. "Red is the rarest hair color in the world: less than 4% of world's population has naturally red hair. Scotland and Ireland have an unusually high incidence of redheadedness: it is reported that redheadedness in Scotland currently weighs in at 11- to 13% of the populace, and Ireland at 10%. By contrast, most northern European populations tally in at about 2%. The rest of the world: 1%. Sweden (a big Viking stronghold), curiously, has almost no redheads at all."

"Scientists agree that red hair is more common among those with genetic roots in northwestern Europe, especially Ireland and Scotland (and by extension, Argentina, and Australia—via immigration and penal colonies). This means that more Celtic Scottish (vs. Lowlander Scots) and Irish people carry redheaded genes to produce all those redheaded offsprings than other cultures. Irish people carry the highest ratio of red-haired gene (and its variations) in the world."

"Some scientists suggest that it is estimated that 40% of all Scots carry the recessive red hair gene especially in the outer Hebrides and the Orkney Islands (probably where the Viking theory was shoehorned in), while the Irish red hair gene tallies in at a whopping 46%, the highest in the world. (Must be all that insular inbreeding!)"

True red-heads could be found in any European country or their descendants, but they are extremely rare outside of Northern and Western Europe. The Celts have the highest tendency for red hair. Ireland, Scotland, northern England, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and Wallonia have the highest ratio of redheads.

''Celtic'' is a linguistical term, not a racial one.

There are plenty of redheads in Central Europe too. Perhaps due to the Celtic heritage.

INTERESTING RED HEADS-Red hair is already rare but these examples are much more rare I guess

Also according to al-Din Genghis' Borjigid clan, had a legend involving their origins: it began as the result of an affair between Alan-ko and a stranger to her land, a glittering man who happened to have red hair and bluish-green eyes. Modern historian Paul Ratchnevsky has suggested in his Genghis biography that the "glittering man" may have been from the Kyrgyz people, who historically displayed these same characteristics. However these traits can also be found among modern Mongolians where they have a predominate Mongoloid appearance and with frequent occurrence of blue eyes, green eyes and red hair.[14] A certain number of Mongols, particularly the Oirat tribe in western Mongolia tend to exhibit lighter features such as fair skin, blue or green eyes, varying shades of brown hair, and sometimes even red or blonde hair.

You made a good point. However remember a section of southern Poland is called Galicia too, this probably infer an ancient Celtic settlement before the Slavs came. No wonder, red-haired individuals appear there more than in the rest of Poland. Urdmurts are also a very red-headed people, it's true they are not related to Celts at least not closely, however they seem to be a higher of R1b halogroup than other people around them. Maybe we should into that. Galatia in Turkey refers a bunch of Celtic people who settled and mingled with native people of Asia Minor. That region too has high degree of red hair in comparison to places around it.

Post some redhead examples of your ethnicity.

What do you think, are they legacy of the Celts?

Also, do redheads generally tend to have more Western phenotypes wherever they appear, even if they are from East Europe? Or not?
For the most part, yes.

Red hair could be a legacy of the Celts. Let us look into it now. In Europe, the areas that were known to have been chiefly settled by the Celts do have higher ratio of red hair than other areas. Apart from Britain and Ireland, Brittany, France does have a higher ratio of pale, red-headed,freckled-type than most of France maybe with the exception of Normandy. In Spain, it's of course Galicia and the "red-headed" Galegos, in northern Portugal too, in times past before Roman conquest There was a Celtic invasion in northern Iberia. No wonder, today people argue about the R1b halogroup is most likely a Celtic link and not an Iberian(Ancient Iberians)one. In Switzerland, the Helvetti brought red-headedness, more common in the west and north than the south and east. In Italy, it's more common in the north than the south, remember invasions from Ancient Gauls who were of course Celtic speakers. In Belgium, Wallonia slightly has more red hair than Germanic Flanders. At one time the Belgae tribes(Celtic) occupy all of Belgium, parts of Netherlands and southern Britain. Westerm Germany has more red hair than eastern Germany, the same with Austria. We could go on and on. Then Western Europe has more red-heads than the rest of Europe. Nevertheless, I said "could be", it's just an opinion.

Put a few redheads in a sunny climate like Spain, a thousand years back. They'll die out. Compare that to Scotland & Ireland, where they can thrive.

Surely weather plays a big part in the amount of redheads.

Put a few redheads in a sunny climate like Spain, a thousand years back. They'll die out. Compare that to Scotland & Ireland, where they can thrive.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff141/nomadct/839px-Europe_sunshine_hours_map.jpgI live in the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, sunny Spain for you, and I see local redheads everyday. My wife, who is of British Isles background, was surprised upon moving to Spain to see so many. Not any more.

By the way, this area was Iberian not Celtic.

There's a town a few km north of here where there's an unusual number of redheads. The urban legend goes that in the 30s a red haired young priest arrived to the village and a few years later most new born babies were red haired.

The truth is that you see many couples who look very much average Spanish brunet(te)s, with red haired children.

That would only be true if skin cancer had a tendency to develop in susceptible individuals prior to reaching fertile age, but this is rarely the case.

In any case, as already pointed out, redheads are nothing rare in Spain.

About 80% of the female red heads pictured above look like bottle jobs. This perception is reinforced by the large gender imbalance. Women are much more likely to dye their hair and are more motivated to appear red headed. Moreover the range of colors in the female examples is much larger, with many having especially vivid, rich, streaked or otherwise variegated hair colorings almost absent from the male sample.

After a quick look over the last pages of this thread, it stands out that, generally speaking, true redheads are mostly only found in Western Europe. And by "Western Europe" I mean the Atlantic fringe.

Meet the most redhead people in the world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udmurt_people

How interesting: also from Wikipedia...

In European culture, prior to the 20th century, red hair was often seen as a stereotypically Jewish trait: during the Spanish Inquisition, all those with red hair were identified as Jewish.[16] In Italy, red hair was associated with Italian Jews, and Judas was traditionally depicted as red-haired in Italian and Spanish art.[17] Writers from Shakespeare to Dickens would identify Jewish characters by giving them red hair.[18] The stereotype that red hair is Jewish remains in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia

Curious that my only Jewish friend really is a redhead :)

Wiki

"Phenotype

Anthropologists relate Udmurts to the Urals branch of the large European race which has some features of the Mongolian race. The Udmurt people are distinguished by a large number of red-haired people who (together with the Scottish & Irish) are probably one of the most "gold-haired" ethnic groups in the world. Most of them are of the middle size, often have blue or gray eyes, high cheek-bones and wide face. The Udmurt people are not of an athletic build but they are very hardy.[5] and there have been claims that they are the "most red-headed" people in the world.[6] Additionally, the ancient Budini tribe, which is speculated to be an ancestor of the modern Udmurts, were described by Herodotus as being predominantly red-headed."

"probably", "probably"; "Large number".. no numbers at all. What's large?? 4%-5%?

Just a bit of trivial musing...

I wonder how accurate this map could be?

http://www.eupedia.com/images/content/red_hair_map_europe.jpg

I mean, how would anyone be able to gather this information on such a grand scale and with such accuracy so as to render it truly representative? I've noticed that what one person may consider to be red hair, the next may not agree. In countries where redhair is very rare, even someone with a slight reddish tinge to their brown hair would be more likely to be labelled a redhead.

Or maybe this map counts frequencies in the populations of people carrying the gene that determines redhair?

Seems iffy to me, anyway.

As for this redheaded Udmurts theory... if you do a search on the said people (without including the word redhead!) the people that overwhelmingly show up are dark brunettes (and quite Asiatic looking). Some blondes. I wonder if possibly the idea that redheads are so frequent among them is a sensationalist notion that came about because there are more redheads there than anyone would have expected (but maybe numbers are still low when compared with Western Europe). I guess there's no way to really know.

I have read that 70% of Udmurts carry the red hair gene - exactly the same which is responsible for Irish redheads, so there might be some truth after all in it. They (Udmurts) probably have much more of them than standard central european population.

I don't know how they draw that map but must be something more or less like that. For entire Portugal the average number that I've read is 3%. I live in central Portugal and judging by my childhood and by what I see when I go get my daughters from school those 3% must be the number. I'm pretty sure that's the number at primary school level (about one redhead per class) there are about half a dozen in the school and the school has 6 classes each with 25-30 kids. I'm not that sure at higher levels. Just like extreme blonds, the hair color tends to get into brown shades very early in the age. Contrary to what happens further north, here it isn't frequent to see adult blonds or red heads even it they had those colors before. I would say that redheads are rare but not that rare, for sure I see at least one every day... I have several redhead friends or former redhead.

Yeah, I've only been to Portugal once (Lisbon and immediate surrounds) and even in that short visit I noticed quite a few natural redheads (not foreigners, but Portuguese natives). I'm quite sure this map is not accurate at all. Same goes for the area of Spain that I live in. Redheads are not so rare. I'm certain the % is higher for Spain than is indicated on this map.

Never heard of any localised redhead surveys in the UK. Yet these maps appear.
There's a DNA redhead survey going about now, as far as I know.

DNA project aims to count Scots redheads

A project is being launched which aims to find out how many people in Scotland carry the red hair gene.

Researchers from the ScotlandsDNA project also hope to discover why Scotland appears to have the most red-headed people in the world.

ScotlandsDNA said about 1-2% of the world's population has red hair, but in Scotland the figure is much higher at around 13% or about 650,000 people.

The information will be used to make a "ginger" map of the British Isles.

Researchers at the ScotlandsDNA project believe the figure for Scottish red hair gene carriers may be much higher, and could be as many as 1.6m.

But still, red is red whatever your age.

Redheads among Turks are rare but not non-existent. Turks with really bright red hair live in the Eastern parts of the Black Sea area and suprisinly, Southeastern Turkey (especially among the Arabs and Assyrians from here).

I have a few relatives (cousin & second cousin) with reddish-brown hair (auburn?). The pictures are not clear but IRL it's clear that it's reddish-brown.

I doubt red hair is related to the Celts, the ancient Celtic homelands (and therefore the most genetically Celtic) were in Central Europe, an area not known for being noticeably red-headed.
On the other hand red hair is most common in the North-West Atlantic fringe including places like Norway (well outside the Celtic sphere), pointing to possibly a brunn type hunter-gatherer origin.

Red hair is very rare among Greeks. I've only seen a handful of redheads, and usually they aren't fully ginger. I think it's slightly more common among Italians, and even Sicilians, for whom I've heard received the trait from Viking invaders (possibly).

I think the number of redheads in my country is lower than 2% which occurs in some data, and their rufosity is not that fiery.

Lol at least 50% of the '' redheads'' psoted here are not redheads at all. You must understand the difference between redhead and brown hair or blonde hair, especially the ones posted by the portugese guy were not redheads at all. Proper redheads I saw only in the last 2 pages, evan though a lot of them were blondes and not redheads.

For someone who see a redhead among it's ethenicity once a year, you seem too restrictive. Do you have a problem only with Portuguese red heads?
Red heads hair comes in different tones also it's not only the hair color, usually they show other typical distinctive details such as phenotype or freckles and others miss compelitely all that and yet they are red heads.

I don't know who you were talking about but I reafirm that this girls for example are red heads, especially because I know them personally for long time.

Red hair comes in various shades:

Red hair varies from a deep burgundy through burnt orange to bright copper. It is characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin.

Again only the girl in the middle is redhead. The man has just redish beard not hear.

Surely weather plays a big part in the amount of redheads.

Put a few redheads in a sunny climate like Spain, a thousand years back. They'll die out. Compare that to Scotland & Ireland, where they can thrive.

Interesting. Azorean redheads are usually very freckly, but have no problem tanning. There aren't that many of them though.

It's the Red-ing festival! Thousands of ginger-haired revellers celebrate Red Hair Day in Dutch city

They have long been the butt of many a joke.
But yesterday there wasn't a smug brunette or blonde anywhere to be seen as thousands of ginger-haired people from around the world descended on a Dutch city.
People of all ages attended the fifth annual 'red-hair day' in Breda in the south of Holland.
The main criteria of attending the free two-day festival is that you have natural red hair.
But the event focuses not just on the colour of the attendants' hair, but on everything to do with the colour red with numerous activities organised.
They include individual photoshoots, a fashion show and even lectures about ginger hair. There are also music events and a group picnic.
