GM Running Out of Trucks and SUVs

General Motors is in trouble because it built too many trucks and SUVs, and neglected the fuel-efficient car market, right?
If so, the bankrupt automaker should have been well on its way to recovery by now. The company is running low on trucks and SUVs.
Automobile Magazine reports, "As General Motors pares down its inventory from a 120-day supply to a 90- to 75-day supply, some dealers are starting to get nervous at the low levels of profitable trucks and SUVs on their lots." The company won't build them any more at the moment. "GM has closed its plants for an extended summer shutdown, and will not begin reopening the plants until July 13."
Buyers interested in any extended- or crew-cab Chevrolet truck, the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia should be particularly aware of the shortage, as should anyone shopping for a short-wheelbase GMC Yukon or Sierra pickup. Those models are in the shortest supply.
GM is encouraging dealer swaps to fill any inventory shortages. Autoblog notes that a recent message from GM to its dealerships "suggests that dealers trade inventory with each other to bolster inventory until the automaker is ready to rekindle its assembly lines."
That approach, while it will help GM trim its historically high inventory level, will certainly weaken the bargaining position of buyers, who can't easily shop multiple dealerships for the best price if those dealerships are all fighting over the same truck.
