Venice born Albanian (originally from Shkodra). He was knighted for designing the world's first mountain railway, the Semmering railway, which is also on the UNESCO list of world heritage (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/785) and has been since 1998. Any such project on the Semmering was thought of as impossible, though he made it possible. His face can be found on Austrian stamps and Austrian Schillings.

He was thought to have left no child as he never went into any relationship. According to his own notes: 'Due to the duties of my work, I have few hours for leisure.' However, he had an affair with a woman, Francieska Wallner, who worked on the railway. They had an illegitimate child named Carl Franz Wallner. Somewhat humorously, the first and middle name are the names of the two parents. His modern day descendant, Nickolaus Wallner, found out that he decidedly was the great great grandson of von Ghega through genetic testing.
