Nice thread, Kemalisté. I was also planning to create one sooner. We should embrace our national holidays more than anything, I'm glad year-by-year more of our compatriots are realizing this, even willing to fight for it.

Happy Republic Day!

Because we are patriots, nationalist people, thats why. But our nationalism is not based on hate towards others but appreciation of our own history. Thankfully, we have more than enough historical events to cheer for. We don't exaggeratedly mourn for our losses unlike our neighboring states but we only celebrate for our advancements.

Btw, there was over 300.000 people in the streets of Izmir, celebrating for our republic. It was an incredible scenery;

Most people don't realize but the nationalism as the basic of the Turkish Republic is a left-wing one. For example MHP is supposed to be a right-wing nationalist party but they always say that they welcome every ethnicity, say kurds, laz, circassian etc. but this is not actually a real nationalist party would advocate, it should be based on ethnic politics.

These are from 2007 Republican rally, and there were around 1.5 million people :thumb001:

Izmir is the most modern, republican, patriotic and laicist city in Turkey for sure. One of the two strongholds that any fascist, separatist or religious party could ever conquer (the other one is Tunceli)

Well, I just pointed out that the government is doing quite the job to keep you overly nationalist. All those flags and Atatürks pics etc, they arent there for nothing. Its an unconscious message to people.

Well, the government is actually trying hard to undermine the nationalistic characteristics of the Republic. Yes, flags and Atatürk's pics are not there for nothing, but they are a message to those who want to destroy those values.

The current government has also a significant affect on Turkish people's being so nationalistic and patriot. The more they attack our values, the more people cling to them.

Yes, thats true. Comparing with the rightist parties in Europe, MHP can only be considered centrist right conservative party.

This is valid for only the current government`s policies since 2007 but this wasn't the case for the previous ones since 1923.

So, Talvi is right considering the Turkish state policy between 1923 to 2007. AKP is trying to undermine these values since 2007 but it`s questionable how far they succeeded on that because people are clinging to our values as you said.

2007 ? they started doing it from the beginning. Remember privatizations and selling policies which received a great public reaction that time.

Maybe they can't do otherwise because it would mean that a significant part of Turks would have to be rejected... so they include them in order to keep them silent and deter potentially separatist movements.

For sure. But nobody believes in their sincerity except right-wing fascists, ethno-centrists and conservative/religious nationalists. Had not a significant part of CHP's left-wing grassroots voted for MHP in the last elections, they could not even be in the parliament now. (there were some sex tape scandals inside the party, which most people saw it as a trick of AKP to keep MHP out of the parliament so that they could have more strength)

MHP has betrayed those who saved them from being out of the parliament, collaborating with AKP and clearing the way for them in the most critical periods. Most people now regret that they felt sorry for MHP. But in the first elections, it is unlikely for them to make it to the parliament again. They've lost their credibility.

They still seem to be doing pretty well, at least according to this poll from August:

According to the results of the survey, which was conducted between Aug. 22 and Aug. 27 by means of in-depth interviews with 3,251 people in 21 provinces, if a new election were held this month, the AK Party would get 46.7 percent of the total votes. The Republican People's Party (CHP) appears as the second most popular party in a possible election with 19.5 percent and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) is third with 16.1 percent. It is worth mention that while the first two parties would lose a significant percentage of their votes, the nationalist MHP seems to have made progress.
