This is typical. During the industrial revolution the same thing was seen. At that time, poverty rates across Europe increased dramatically. It is unclear if this is also happening in Latin America. It may be that poverty is declining due to economic growth but that a minority of the population is disproportionately benefiting.

It seems that certain personality types or people with particular aptitudes do better within the context of capitalism. This does not mean they are better or more talented than others, as some seem to think. It is merely that their skills and aptitudes, which frequently include a sociopathic desire to crush and/or defraud others, thrive in market conditions.

Other talents, such as for art, philosophy and the liberal arts in general are not valued by the marketplace. So such people do not generally prosper in a market-oriented society, even though they may be of more innate quality than the denizens of the marketplace, who are often crude and anti-intellectual people; the kind of crass and ignorant businessman that one encounters so frequently.
