TWO in three Britons want tougher immigration controls to halt our out-of-control population growth, a major survey revealed yesterday.

Labour’s open-door immigration policies have led to a lack of affordable housing, overcrowded trains and buses, clogged roads and a huge strain on the environment, said up to three in four people.
Over half of those surveyed said spiralling immigration is ruining the fabric of life in Britain.
With a record 1,650 immigrants settling here every day, nearly half said their city, town or village would be better off with fewer people.

Seven in 10 people said the current 61million population was already too high, with 69 per cent calling for cuts in immigration.
Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green: “This poll demonstrates public unhappiness at the pressure on public services, imposed by high immigration numbers in recent years.

“This is a direct result of the *Government’s long-term failure to control immigration.
“It shows why we badly need an annual limit on immigration.”
He promised that such a limit would be introduced if the Conservative party wins the next general election.
LibDem Home Affairs spokesman Chris Huhne said: “Years of Labour mismanagement of the immigration system has shattered public *confidence in it.
“Since exit checks were abolished, we don’t even know how many people live here and the public wants the Government to get a grip.”

The YouGov poll interviewed more than 2,000 people in May. It was commissioned by the environmental think-tank the *Optimum Population Trust, which is supported by natural history film-maker Sir David Attenborough.
The group believes the UK’s long-term sustainable population is only 30million and warns we are on course for almost a 40 per cent increase – from 61million to 85million – over the next 70 years.

Last night the trust’s chairman Roger *Martin said the message from the survey was “unmistakable”.
He said: “The Government is presiding over a future which most in the country do not want and would reject if they had the chance.”
The number of foreigners living in Britain has risen by 1.1million in three years – enough to fill a city the size of Birmingham.

Last night a UK Border Agency spokesman said: “The Government is continuing to deliver the biggest shake-up of the immigration system for over 45 years, delivering a stronger border, a selective *Australian-style points system and a clear expectation that newcomers need to earn the right to stay.”

Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said: “There are lies, damn lies, statistics and immigration *statistics.
“Our new points-based system will help to ensure we will not meet the 70million figure.
“Our system ensures that only the people Britain needs come here to work and study and covers twice as many people as a cap would.
“In addition, we are legislating to break the link between coming here temporarily to work or study and staying here permanently.”

It's all hot air. Also, for the Tories to say that they'll make sure we only allow our population to increase by a maximum of 9 million isn't particularly impressive is it. What they're saying is that under Conservative we'll only grow 15%... as if 15% isn't a ridiculously large increase.
