According to several reports, Microsoft has placed its longtime communication client Windows Live Messenger on the chopping block. Skype will eventually become the successor as Windows Live Messenger accounts will be integrated into Skype. Microsoft has been slowly migrating users over to the Messenger backend for Skype over the past few months. Sources say around 80 percent of all IMs sent on Skype are handled by the Messenger framework.

The company is expected to make an official announcement of the two communication platforms, possibly as early as this week according to sources. The move is orchestrated by linking with Microsoft accounts (Live) with Skype login names. Some commenters on several sites anticipate multiple accounts using the Windows 8 messaging app or prompted to Windows Live with Skype accounts.

Users of Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows are now greeted with options to log in using a Microsoft or Facebook account.

In June 2011, Windows Live Messenger’s marketshare reached past 40 percent while Skype takes in 27 percent. Together, they take in a lion share of the instant messenger marketshare worldwide. Its closest competitors Yahoo! Tencent QQ and Google Talk continue to trail at 15%, 5% and 4% respectively.
