That is not the reason. The Roma were called Egyptians (Gypsies, Gitanos...) because when they reached Western Europe, they introduced themselves as counts or lords of Little Egypt, which was the way they called a region between the Peloponnese (Greece) and Turkey. So is attested in documents from the 15th century. And that is right, because the Roma entered Europe via that area.

In Soviet army Russian guys get to serve together with other ethnicities who often played 'I don't speak Russian' card to avoid duties. They were called 'churkas' for their stupidity.

It's not always used as an ethnic slur, "Schiavo" or the variant "Schiavon" (meaning "Slav") are rather common Italian surname at least in Veneto and in Friuli.
