A golden horse head—an ornament from one end of a long-gone iron horse bit—is part of a 2,400-year-old treasure recently discovered in an ancient Thracian tomb in Sveshtari, Bulgaria, archaeologists announced Thursday.

The Thracians were ruled by a warrior aristocracy that had access to plentiful gold deposits at the mouth of the Danube River, which contained one of the largest ancient supplies of the metal. They enjoyed a vibrant trade with their neighbors, including the Scythians to the north, and the Greeks to the south—a fact reflected in Thracian art.

"The styles that have been found in Thracian art and Thracian gold represent a mix of Scythian, Greek, and Macedonian cultures, and of course Thracian culture itself," said U.S. archaeologist and National Geographic fellow Fredrik Hiebert, who was not involved in the discovery.

Bulgaria has a long history of gold metallurgy. "There are sites on the Bulgarian coast that are literally thousands of years older than any other culture that used gold in a ritual fashion," Hiebert said.

In 1972, for example, a worker discovered a 6,000-year-old necropolis near the Bulgarian city of Varna that was filled with graves containing the oldest known gold hoard ever found. (See "At 'Europe's Oldest Town,' Unusual Fortifications Hint at Prehistoric Riches.")

The lion was used by the Thracians as seen on this piece of gold. Maybe the current Bulgarian lion symbol originates from the one of the Thracians. :thumb001:

After Italy and Greece, officialy,Bulgaria is the third country in Europe with the most ancient remains.

It needs billions of investments in that field in order to show it all to the world.

However the biggest symbol of the Thracians was the Thracian horseman... Interestingly enough the Bulgar Madara horseman really looks like the Thracian horseman whose statues and releafs are all over Bulgaria. Also its is proposed that the cult to St. Georgi originates from the Thracian myth of the Thracian horseman.

Louvre 'Eyes' Bulgaria's Newest Thracian Treasure

http://www.novinite.com/media/images/2012-11/photo_verybig_145048.jpg

Bulgaria's Culture Minister, Vezhdi Rashidov, has informed Monday that the unique gold Thracian treasure recently discovered in the famous Sveshtari tomb in Bulgaria would be soon displayed at the Louvre.

Speaking in an interview for TV7, Rashidov congratulated with the discovery the team of archaeologists, led by one of the most prominent Bulgarian experts on Thracian archaeology, Prof. Diana Gergova, from the National Archaeology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS. He pointed out this was an extremely intricate treasure, with high-quality molds and applications.

"After 20 years of hard work this lady finally achieved huge success. It is also marvelous that our lands continue to unearth such treasures," said he.

The Minister explained that Bulgaria will soon have a large display of Thracian culture at the world-famous Louvre museum in Paris, pointing out the new find had caused renewed interest there since the museum wants to show new objects as well.

Rashidov voiced firm conviction the Sveshtari treasure would be included in the display. He further informed he expected the Louvre's Deputy Chair to arrive in Bulgarian soon for just one of the recent series of working meetings.
