UAE carrier called Etisalat recently made the news for bungling the rollout of a spyware update to its users. It notified customers to install a "service enhancement" update which turned out to be anything but "service enhancing". It cause a number of problems with shortened battery life, phones crashing and so forth which eventually drew attention to it.
It was then discovered that it is actually an application designed to give access to the phone to third parties. The carrier keeps maintaining that it was "a service update" but anyway....... obviously not.
Moral of the story - always assume that your phones and computers are insecure.
