Because 90% of TA members adore the Japanese and their culture it is long overdue to dedicate them a thread.
Post anything about Japan here.
Mangas, Art, Individuals, Samurais, Kamikazes, Films, Docus etc.

I will start:

can i say something negative too? i think they are overrated. and they are just über because they seperate and live on the island of japan if they were to introduce their culture somehwere where whites settle they would earn disrespect soon just like the chinese or every other non-white. but they have a fascinating culture but not more than some others (chinese, indians). japan was long vasall of china and it looks like if they could become again. they were allied with axis and built important technology though.

Japan is more weird than admirable in my book. Dont get me wrong I like the traditional culture (is there anyone who doesnt love ninjas?) and their attitude when it comes to immigration. But there is also a lot of things I dislike about the country; they arent less decadent than we are, just in different ways.

Unless they are busy cleaning off dead bodies from the tracks ... :P

Some things I dont like in Japan:

the whole freaking system and how stuck they are in it! They have so many rules for everything and when something happens outside the rules they freeze and they are completely unable to think for themselves. Their working culture also promotes non-thinking and just following rules, mindlessly.

How people are trying to sell you things in the stores. Im so sick of salespeople coming up to me in stores trying to advise me.

What many people find as "Japanese excellent customer service" I find dehumanizing. They are ordered to tell you like a hundred different politenesses, and at the same time they dont even raise their head to see who they are talking to.

If that ain't the truth. I've been there on 2 separate occasions: 1 for business and 1 for travel and came to the conclusion that I like vegetation too much, and the clean smelling air of my city (yeah mines actually cleaner!) then any Tokyo scene.

I was seriously thinking about taking a job up there but after visiting it for two weeks uh-ah no way!

But its true contemporary Japanese society can be quite the grind. The past society of Japan was very fascinating and a cool history it was but unfortunately the traditional nature of Japanese society is rather diminished and their landscapes can be uber-metropolis looking.

I'm certainly critical of Japan these days (they actually have quite a bit of unfortunate problems for themselves - its certainly not the paradise we in the west sometimes think it would be) but here is a reminder of some of the more fascinating aspects of their society - consider the matrial art tradition of Kyudo:

One of the secrets of success of the Japanese is that they do not have Jews to suck their blood, the second is in the discipline (often exceeding the limits of normal) not in creativity.
They are not innovators, they just copied what was invented in the west. So, the conclusion is that they have a great talent development of others' inventions. Also, isolation is an advantage for them, not a handicap.

One way or another,Japan,Korea and South East Asian countries are heavily influenced by the Middle Kingdom(this is the way Chinese call the Greater China:)).

Anyway,i admire the Japanese in general, they have great cuisine and probably the Highest Average Life Expectancy worldwide(Keep in fact that they smoke like chimneys too).

For me Japan equals with the best electronics, cars and high-tech products in general.
Every Canon product i ever bought works up to date...even after a decade of hard and complex use...in contrast with Philips peace of crap electronics...

To be honest,Japan was the only Axis country i felt sympathetic towards them, even though we must not forget the atrocities against the Chinese population of Nanking.

Japanese are very strong people who fight against all odds and one way or another in the end they survive and prosper.

I feel sorry for their financial problems during the last two decades and i wish they make it through this like they did after Nuclear bombing, earthquakes etc.

I'd like China not to destroy the Japanese but take them under their arm and live peacefully and without armed conflicts between them.

So this crisis is nothing new for them. Their main problem is overpopulation.

Ottoman Ertugrul Frigate;

Sultan Abdulhamid Khan, who came to the throne in 1876, decided to develop Ottoman relations with the Empire of Japan, which was on the rise in the Far East. These relations, which commenced with a visit by the training ship ‘Seiki’ in 1878, developed rapidly and were further strengthened when the Meiji emperor gave the sultan the Japanese Order of the Crysanthemum, the empire’s highest honor, in return for which the sultan gave him a ‘Murassa Nişanı’ of the first degree. It was following the visit of the Meiji emperor’s uncle, Prince Komatsu, in September 1887 that Abdulhamid II made the decision to send a ship to Japan.

The vessel chosen was the frigate Ertuğrul. Despite objections raised on the grounds that it was old and in disrepair, the 79-meter vessel set sail from Istanbul on July 14, 1889, with a crew of 609 under the command of Commodore "Osman Beg". The ship eventually reached Tokyo’s harbor of Yokohama at the end of a lengthy voyage that was intended to take three months but ended up taking eleven due to a series of accidents and other setbacks.

The crew of the Ertuğrul presented the honors and gifts they had brought to the Emperor Meiji to great acclaim. After a stay of more than three months at Yokohama, they set sail on the return voyage. But on September 16 a strong wind blew up, turning into a typhoon towards evening. Around 9:30 that night the ship struck the Funagora Rocks at the eastern tip of the island of Oshima off the southern tip of Japan’s main island and was dashed asunder. Upwards of five hundred sailors were killed in the disaster. The 69 sailors and officers who were saved were treated by the people of Oshima and later returned to Istanbul on the vessels Hiyei and Kongo.

Despite this tragic ending, the sailors of the Ertuğrul had successfully completed their mission. And the frigate Ertuğrul, which had set out with the purpose of furthering relations between the two countries, became the cornerstone of Turkey-Japan friendship.

Turkey-Japanese relations have been a series of mutual heroic acts from the beginning

Relations between the two countries started in the 19th century. A foundational event was the Ertuğrul incident in 1890. The Turkish frigate Ertuğrul sank off the coast of Wakayama, Japan, after having an audience with Emperor Meiji. The surviving sailors were taken back to Istanbul by two Japanese frigates.

In 1985, this gesture of kindness was reciprocated during the Iran-Iraq war. As hostilities escalated to an extent that all aircraft were threatened with being shot-down, Turkey sent an aircraft in to rescue 215 Japanese nationals who were living in Tehran at the time. The Turkish government issued a statement: "We have not forgotten the rescue of the sailors of the Ertuğrul. Thus, once we heard there were Japanese citizens in need of help, we went to their rescue."
The last episode of this story happened during Van Earthquake.

A Japanese doktor Atsushi Miyazaki (1970 - 10 Kasım 2011) ,gave his life when he was trying to help Van earthquake when his own country is suffering from eathquake, nuclear poisoning and tsunami.
A few weeks later one of his group Miyuki Konnai returned to Turkey she was speaking Turkish.
They were not Muslim but they also contributed to our rituals for showing respect to our culture ,They sacrified a sheep and gave that meat to people suffering from Earthquake
..That was also a very good example of Japanese kindness and respect

I really cant find words to describe my feelings ,hereby I anounce every Japanese person is my sister or brother from now on and i do whatever i can, I voe with my spirit and mind.

We will never forget Miyazaki Sama.

why?

Because there are a lot of nice things to see, here but the society as a whole is not fit for an average European. At least it does not fit me. There are too many mindless rules and the way their society is built up may be good for the country but not good for the individuals at all. It is an extremely suffocating society, and rarely do people get the chance to live outside it here.
(although I just saw a homeless man sleeping on the street in underwear...)

Even though if you more here as a foreigner, you didnt go through the process Japanese people do to become "real Japanese citizens".

Seven Samurai is a great movie. I used to watch it a lot as a kid.

Great film, indeed. Rashômon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042876/) too, in my opinion. But I can understand that older Japanese films might not be suited to everyone because of the expression of emotions that sometimes look very exaggerated.

Yukio Mishima: Man of Pure Action (http://openrevolt.info/2012/05/13/yukio-mishima-man-of-pure-action/)

http://cdn.counter-currents.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/mishima1.jpg

God, thank you. I was about to write how come in a thread about Japan everyone keeps talking about Pokemons, action figures and animes and no one mentions one of the most interesting and spectacular personalities in 20th century... Mishima, an immaculate and noble soul like the fallen snow and the purest blood. He didn't make art to express his "feelings" (petit bourgeois), but instead turned his whole life until the moment of his death, and that moment included, into a work of art.

Wonderful song about him:

jStgpoYpVLA
With superb lyrics:

"I grandi uomini non parlano,
Come fiori di ciliegio si disperdono,
Prima delle discendenze che si ostinano a sopravvivere agli eroi.

Ma come il fiore reciso che io scelsi tra mille per te
Il piú bello è il più giovane che prima cade sul prato.
Per dimostrare che vivere non ha senso senza il morire.
Ripercorrendo il sostanziale sacrificio degli eroi"

Makes me tremble.

As for his actual works, I'd recomend his tetralogy "The sea of fertility" and the classic "Confessions of a mask", but since many people don't dig reading that much these days, I can also point out the excellent film about him:

lkNVlxsNROE
"- You're still too young and pure. You will learn to tone down your feelings.
- If purity is toned down, it's no longer purity.
- Total purity is no longer possible in this world.
- Yes it is! -... if you turn your life into a line of poetry written with a splash of blood."

Lowly.

Most of them dress and act like they are 9.

That's great, that's one of the reasons they live long!

Awesome drama : Watching these days

Fuurin Kazan

Historical Drama is a life story of Yamamoto Kansuke, a lonely genius of strategy at the Age of the Civil War in the 16th century. Kansuke works under Takeda Shingen and pursues his dream of unifying the whole country through aiding the warlord of Kai. At the same time, Kansuke supports Shingen?s concubine Yu from his selfless affection for the woman who hates but eventually loves the warlord who killed her father and family. With the aid of Kansuke?s strategies, Shingen expands his power northward, where he is destined to fight with Kenshin Uesugi, the warlord of Echigo. The drama portrays how those who fight for their dreams face their destinies in the turbulent age.

I read these daily. My son studies Ki Aikido and I really love the philosophy.

1. OUR MOTTO

Let us have a universal spirit that loves and protects all creation and helps all things grow and develop.
To unify mind and body and become one with the universe is the ultimate purpose of our study.

FOUR MAJOR PRINCIPLES TO UNIFY MIND AND BODY:
1. Keep one-point
2. Relax completely
3. Keep weight underside
4. Extend Ki

2. THE VALUE OF OUR EXISTENCE

Our lives are born of the Ki of the Universe. Let us give thanks for being born not as plants and animals, but as human beings blessed with a Universal Mind.
Let us pledge to fulfill our missions by helping to guide the development and creation of the Universe.

3. THE WAY TO UNION WITH KI

The absolute Universe is One. We call this Ki. Our lives and our bodies are born of the Ki of the Universe. We study thoroughly the principles of the Universe and practice them.
We are one with the universe. There is no need to despond, no need to fear. The way we follow is the way of the Universe which no difficulty nor hardship can hinder.
Let us have the courage to say “If I have a clear conscience and a calm spirit, I dare to face courageously any obstacle I may encounter”.

4. UNIFICATION OF MIND AND BODY

Mind and body were originally one. Do not think that the power you have is only the power you ordinarily use and moan that you have little strength. The power you ordinarily use is like the small, visible segment of an iceberg. When we unify our mind and body and become one with the Universe, we can use the great power that is naturally ours.

5. THE ONE POINT IN THE LOWER ABDOMEN

The Universe is a limitless circle with a limitless radius. This condensed becomes the one point in the lower abdomen which is the center of the Universe.
Let us calm our mind in this one point and become one with and send our Ki constantly to the Universe.

6. RELAXATION

We are accustomed to having trouble with unnecessary nervousness. Nervousness causes blood vessels to contract, making it difficult for the impurities to leave the body, and thus makes one susceptible to many diseases. Relaxation is truly an elixir of life.
Let us spread the true method of relaxation which enables us to meet each day with a spirit like that of a mild spring breeze. If we practice this, we need never get nervous and excited in our daily affairs.

7. LIVING CALMNESS

In a natural state, the weight of objects is always underside. Therefore, the physical expression of living calmness is that the weight of every part of our body is also underside. Like the calm, still surface of the water that reflects the moon and a flying bird, true living calmness is the condition of our mind that reflects all living things clearly. This is our original and natural state. By understanding these principles, we can acquire true living calmness.

8. PLUS LIFE

The absolute universe is One. Then two opposing forces appeared, and the relative world was born. In the Orient this dualism is called yin and yang, in the West plus and minus.
A bright, happy life is called plus life, and a dark gloomy one is called minus.
Let us eliminate every minus thought and strive for plus life henceforth.

9. THE SUBCONSCIOUS

The subconscious mind acts as a storehouse of knowledge and past experiences. The materials stored in the subconscious mind form the conscious mind.
Henceforth, let us cease putting any minus material into the subconscious. Let us always extend plus Ki and live our life with a positive mind.

10. THE PRINCIPLE OF NON-DISSENSION

There is no conflict in the Absolute Universe, but there is conflict in the relative world.
If we unify our mind and body, become one with the Universe, and practice its principles, others will follow us gladly.
Do not say that this is a world where we must struggle to live each day. The true way to success is exactly one and the same as the principle of non-dissension, and that is the way to peace.

11. THE DEFINITION OF KI

We begin with the number ONE in counting all things. It is impossible that this ONE can ever be reduced to zero. Because just as something cannot be made from nothing, ONE cannot be made from zero.
Ki is like the number ONE. Ki is formed from infinitely small particles, smaller than an atom. The universal Ki condensed becomes an individual, which further condensed becomes the one point in the lower abdomen, which in turn infinitely condensed never becomes zero, but becomes ONE with the universe.
Thus we understand the definition of Ki.

12. THE KI DEVELOPMENT EXERCISES

It is easier to coordinate mind and body when we are sitting or standing still than when in motion. But true unification means to maintain the coordination of mind and body even when we are moving.
The Ki development exercises train one to always maintain the unification of mind and body in our daily life. By applying them to our life, we can perform to the best of our ability in all circumstances.

13. THE UNITY OF CALM AND ACTION

Just as a top spinning rapidly becomes steady, the most rapid movement results in calm. Like the eye of the typhoon which is always peaceful, inner calm results in great strength of action. Calm and action are exactly one.
Only when we keep one point and unify our mind and body, can we find spare time even when busy. Keep a calm mind and you will be able to perform to the best of your ability even in an emergency or when facing important tasks.

14. FUDOSHIN

True FUDOSHIN is not a rigid, immobile state of mind, but the condition of stability which comes from the most rapid movement. In other words, like the steadiness of the spinning top, the state of perfect spiritual and physical stability arises from movement which continues infinitely and is so infinitely rapid that it is imperceptible.
This movement is condensed at the one point in the lower abdomen. By putting everything into the one point, we can experience FUDOSHIN and not lose our stability no matter what happens.

15. KI BREATHING

Breathe out so that your breath travels infinitely to the ends of the Universe;
breathe in so that your breath reaches your one point and continues infinitely there.
Ki breathing is an important way of unifying mind and body.
At night, when all is quiet and calm, do this alone, and you will feel that you are the Universe and that the Universe is you. It will lead you to the supreme ecstasy of being one with the Universe. At this moment the life power that is rightfully yours is fully activated.

16. KIATSU (Healing with Ki)

We have learned coordination of mind and body and Ki breathing. Therefore we can bring the Ki of the Universe into our bodies at any time.
When a water pump is dried out, no water can flow from the well up through the pump. To start this flow again we must put some water back into the pump. In the same way, Ki does not flow strongly in a person suffering from illness or misfortune.
Let us practice KIATSU to put Ki back into these people, stimulate their own flow of Ki, and give them a fresh start to happiness.

17. REISEISHIN (The Universal Mind)

Human beings are blessed with a mind that is directly connected to the mind of the Universe. This is known as REISEISHIN.
The moon is clearly reflected in the water when the water is calm. In this same way when our mind and body are unified and calm, our REISEISHIN manifests itself completely. Once this happens all suffering and wicked desires fall away, and the Universal Mind of love and protection for all things appears in us.
Let us strive to realize our REISEISHIN.

18. THE MIND THAT SEEKS TRUTH

We call the mind that wants to make the way of the Universe clear and to put it into practice, the mind that seeks truth. However clever a dog or monkey may be, they cannot realize the Universal Mind. Only human beings have the privilege and capacity to realize it. If you have the mind that seeks truth, you are happy because this is proof that you are a real human being.

19. WILLPOWER

An old Oriental saying tells us, “When our willpower is in harmony with the Universe and focused upon a stone, it can pass through it. In such a state the mind can command the wind, rain and thunder.”
But from where does our willpower come? Those who understand and answer this question are those who accomplish important tasks. When we coordinate the mind and body by stilling the waves of our mind to imperceptible, infinitely decreasing ripples, we can send forth our great willpower that can move the Universe.

20. INTOKU (Good done in Secret)

Just as the number One can never be reduced to zero, once we act or speak, our action or speech is never completely erased.
An old Oriental saying tells us, “Sow good, and the harvest will be good. Sow evil and reap evil.” We must understand that everything we do comes back to ourselves.
Therefore before wishing for our own happiness and welfare and that of our children, we must do good in secret. To do good in secret means to act without seeking attention and praise, to act without any hope of reward. This is called INTOKU.
Among the various ways of performing INTOKU, to walk the way of the Universe and lead others along this way is best.

21. SETSUDO (Teaching the Way of the Universe)

Selfish people have never understood and traveled the way of the Universe in the past. Therefore when we realize the principles and way of the Universe, the Universe gives us the responsibility to spread them to the world.
Do not think that you cannot help another person. What you learn today, you can teach another the next day. The world is full of people who have lost the way of the Universe and suffer from mental illness. Let us do our best to explain the correct principles of the Universe to them.

22. THE TREASURE OF KI TESTING

Having no color, no odor and no shape, the mind is not something that can be grasped by the senses. However, based on the principle that the mind and body are actually one, we can know the state of this ungraspable mind by testing the body, which is available to our senses.
Ki Tests are not founded on the idea of testing for strength or weakness. The most important factor in Ki testing is to accurately inform the person of the state of his or her mind. Thus, the person performing Ki tests must truly understand and exhibit Oneness of mind and body from the outset and then perform the tests correctly.

Best blades ever. Amazing honesty, if you leave your wallet on top of your car, it will be there unless a foreigner steals it. Classical Japanese furniture and house decorum the best there is, as far as elegance and clean look and simplicity goes. Japanese gardens are a work of art, breathtaking. Japanese plants simply amazing. Zen is real cool. Samurai attire is awesome. Traditional Japanese tools are greatly practical and a work of art themselves.

Japanese is the only culture outside the European culture that I have any interest in. Great people, great culture. There is weirdness but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

I like Japanese movies from the 40's-80's (Kurosawa, Katsu Shintaro) and I like the history. But I don't have much admiration for modern Japan. Someone mentioned Seki knives. They're decent. I've owned a few (I've owned Mcusta and have a Seki Spyderco now). But they aren't the end all be all and you pay a premium for them. The whole country is like a strip mall. What are they called? Otaku? I think if most japanophile obsessive people were to visit Japan they'd be disappointed. It is literally like a big strip mall.

Best blades ever.

I'd argue with that. People are fascinated with Japanese blades only because those blades has never been tested against finest European armors. I tend to think both Western and Eastern European medieval weaponry is far superior to anything Japan ever had.

Things I loathe about Japan

The manga/anime/pokemon whatever (all comic-related cults); it gives me the creeps as it implies some sort of pedophilia

http://feministsforchoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Manga.png

Their stuck-up customs and fixated social ways out of which they cannot possibly function. Don't get me wrong, I love order and hierarchy; but I also love critical thinking and flexibility in problem solving (thinking outside the box) which is what made Europeans marvel

http://fastexposure.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/japanese-business-etiquette1.jpg?w=830

Their weird and sick sexual fixations on various things such as ejaculating in public, sniffing the underwear of young female students (I was told used student panties are often sold to companies by teen girls who in turn upload them in automatic vending machines for the pervs to have easy access :D), and much weirder things to be mentioned here

http://www.loneleeplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/panty-vending-machine-japan.png

The porn, wherein if you were to shave the genitalia of the actors, you could make a nice warm blanket for the winter; of course they are into "molesting" a little girl - with their tiny weenies that's about the best they can do.

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/8240/123rl.jpg

Their horrendous TV shows were everyone just jumps up and down and shrieks frantically for no reason while dressed up like a carrot with polka dots

Ve95kC3OgFo

Their vehemently tasteless and extravagant kawaii street style; I just can't stand grown up women dressing up like 9-year olds, like Talvi says, with the fluorescent hair extensions and shoes with soles that are 5-stories tall and make them look like their walking on bricks.

http://styleinvasion.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/japan_fashion29_si.jpg

Their urban landscape - just how much neon signs can the human brain tolerate without becoming insane?

http://www.webjet.com.hk/site/images/mod_intairspec/Tokyo1_343506.jpg

Their notorious obsession with electronic gadgets.

What I like about Japan:

Their Shinkansen (they are quick, reliable and efficient and always on time. Just the kind of things we need here in Europe), the fact they are a very innovative and educated (they really value their education) people (unlike the bullshit heard from Americans that Japanese can only copy stuff: well they are at least 20,30 years ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to robotics alone), their cuisine, their sense of aesthetics (I am a sucker for Japanese architecture) and ways of using even the tiniest spaces, Shintoism and the fact that they knew how to organise their economic rebirth after WWII - just their sense of order, propriety and (it may sound strange to hear that from a democrat like myself) hierarchy (yes I really appreciate the system of keiretsu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiretsu) and I think we should copy it and learn from it):

ptjUWnCaeo0

I really appreciate Japanese music (Japanese traditional music, J-pop usually sucks eggs) and Japanese traditional art. Yap: the Nips really know their stuff. :thumb001:

I think that some of their women can be absolutely smashing but they should keep on wearing those traditional clothes as it looks much more natural on them. It seems that the Japanesecan choose between two modes only: respectable or just completely devoid of any morality. I remember that I have called the Japanese the "Brits of Asia" before because the Brits have exactly the same thing: either very sophisticated or complete thrash. It's probably because the Japanese society (like Britain) is hierarchical and overstructured so they just need to "bust out of the sardine can" every once in a while.

Do japanese men hit on you often?

yes

That's great, that's one of the reasons they live long!

No, the Japanese people who have lived long were born at the time when they didnt dress and act like they are 9.
Also, the people from Japan who live the longest are from the south - Okinawa, Ryukyu islands, and whether one can call them Japanese is debatable.

Now they die at 50 from overworking. Its called 過労死.

The old Japanese of today were the guys that survived Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu, Okinawa, Iwo Jima etc. and who went back to work the day the war was over, putting in their strength, their fanaticism, their work ethic, sacrificing family, their own lives and everything they had to rebuild their country. Twelve hours, sixteen hours a day. For them they had lost the war but a new war was taking place: this time an economic war and one can say they thrashed the U.S.A completely and utterly in that war. Because those polite salarymen in their suits were effectively samurai behind desks. They are not Japan's self-absorbed generation of today (their post-1985 version of our baby boomers): they were hardcore.

Come along as I ride the trains of Tokyo from first to last train!

Steady-ish shots:
For those wondering, the stabilizer used is the Zhiyun Crane. It allowed me to capture scenes I normally wouldn't as I was walking from one place to another. It's not completely smooth though, as a lot of footage has some bounce if you pay attention. If I would have walked with a more ninja-like step, I probably could have cut it down somewhat.

People not staring:
The nice thing about the handheld stabilizer, is that it wasn't as obvious when I was filming, due to way I was holding it. People did look at the camera here and there, but not as much as if I would have used a tripod, or if I stuck my face behind the camera at all times. Depending on where I was, I would just hold the camera at stomach level and not look at the camera, so you wouldn't know I was filming. It probably looked like I was carrying my camera going from one place to the next as opposed to looking like I was actively filming.

Face masks:
Totally anecdotal, but I hear half the reason is to wear while sick to prevent spread of germs, half is to not get sick, and if a lady is wearing, it may be because she didn't feel like putting on makeup. Air quality is fine, no problem there.

So-called "sakura" (サクラ - in katakana) - cherry blossom. It's also a given name.

Heart of the Great Wisdom Sutra

[Everyone]
When a sincere truth seeker attains the wisdom of enlightenment, he realizes that all the five senses are empty and he transcends every suffering.

Listen: All things are no different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from all things. Form is emptiness; emptiness is form. Feelings, perceptions, impulses, consciousness are also like this.

Listen: The original nature of all things is neither born nor extinguished. There is no purity, no defilement; no gain, no loss.

In this world of emptiness there is no form, no feelings, perceptions, impulses, or consciousness. No eye, ear, tongue body, or mind. Therefore, no color, sound, smell, taste, touch, or thought. The world of form does not exist, nor the world of the mind or of ignorance; no old age and no death.

Yet there is continuous ignorance, old age, and death.

There is no suffering, no cause of suffering, no cessation of suffering; no wisdom and no attainment because there is nothing to be attained. The compassionate truth-seeker depends upon the wisdom of enlightenment.

When the mind does not become attached to anything, there are no obstacles and fear does not exist. This mind goes beyond all disruptive views and attains Nirvana. All the Buddhas of the past, present and future depend upon the wisdom of enlightenment--and so attain the supreme, wisdom of enlightenment as the great unexplainable true word, the great shining true word that is able to remove all suffering. It is true, not false. This true word of wisdom says:

Gyate Gyate Hara Gyate Hara So Gyate Bodhi Sowa Ka.

Shingon Teaching

Shingon is a form of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, it is also called Shingon Mikkyo. This school was founded in 804 AD by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in Japan. The teachings of Shingon are based on the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra, the fundamental sutras of Shingon. Through the cultivation of three secrets, the actions of body, speech and mind, we are able to attain enlightenment in this very body. When we can sustain this state of mind, we can become one with the life force of the Universe, known as Mahavairocana Buddha. The symbolic activities are present anywhere in the universe. Natural phenomena such as mountains and oceans and even humans express the truth described in the sutras.

The universe itself embodies and can not be separated from the teaching. In the Shingon tradition, the practitioner uses the same techniques that were used over 1,200 years ago by Kukai, and have been transmitted orally generation after generation to the present. As Shingon Buddhists, there are three vows to observe in our lives:

May we realize Buddhahood in this very life.

May we dedicate ourselves to the well-being of people.

May we establish the World of Buddha on this earth.

Becoming a Buddha in This Very Life (Sokushin Jobutsu) The unique feature of this Shingon Teaching is that one does not become a Buddha only in his mind, nor does one become a Buddha after one has died. It means one is able to attain perfection of all of the qualities of a Buddha while one is yet living in his present physical body. An essay on the Bodhicitta (Bodaishin-ron) says: "One speedily attained great Awakening in the very body born of mother and father." According to the Shingon tradition, all things in this universe -- both physical matter, mind and mental states -- are made up of some six primary elements. These six primary elements are: earth (the principle of solidity), water (moisture), fire (energy), wind (movement), space (the state of being unobstructed) and consciousness (the six ways of knowing objects). Buddha as well as ordinary human beings are made up of these six elements, and in this sense both Buddha and human beings are basically and in essence identical. When we realize this truth, then our actions, our words, and our thoughts will undergo and experience of faith which will cause them to be correct and purify their surroundings. This living, physical body will be able to achieve Buddhahood.

Salvation and Enlightenment. Shingon Buddhism grants salvation and enlightenment to human beings who would otherwise be caught in the cycle of birth and death. Once a person is able to enter the gate of this faith, he/she will be able to receive that salvation and guidance of many Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It is a religion in which that person will be fortunate enough to be able to recite the mantras that are the Buddha's own words. Kobo Daishi explained two points as its special characteristics:

1. Attainment of enlightenment in this very body.

2. The present moment that clearly teaches the content of enlightenment.

He explained these two aspects throughout his writings like, "The Meaning of Becoming a Buddha in This Body," "The Ten Stages in the Development of the Mind," "The Meaning of the Secret Samaya Precepts of the Buddha." It is a blessings of Shingon Buddhism to make it possible to come into direct contact with the practices leading to salvation. Shingon discipline The Shingon Teachings are broad and profound, and require strict discipline to put into practice. If we do not personally practice them in our daily lives of faith, then this treasure will become a useless possession. In actuality, we must manifest the teachings and practice of becoming a Buddha in this body in concrete form. The form of this faith is the developing one's mind into higher stage and engaging in discipline. There are various meditation techniques in Shingon traditions including the practice for gaining secular benefits for others by using mantra chanting and mudra hand signs as well as seeking enlightenment in this very body for oneself.

Shingon Discipline

The followings are some of the major forms practiced by many practitioners: Susokukan (Basic meditation to find one's own breathing pace) Gachirinkan (Moon Disc meditation) Ajikan (A syllable meditation) These practices are gateways into understanding the nature of Reality. Through these gateways we can experience many states of consciousness and as our skill develops we begin to have real insight into the nature of the unproduced state. Through these meditations we can experience the flow of energy from this state into this physical plane of existence. However, this state cannot be experienced without correct understanding of its doctrine and the guide by an authentic teacher.

Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukou)- Kyu Sakamoto (English Translation and Lyrics) About the Lyrics The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears won't fall. The verses of the song describe his memories and feelings. The English-language lyrics of the version recorded by A Taste of Honey are not a translation of the original Japanese lyrics but a completely different set of lyrics set to the same basic melody. The title Sukiyaki, a Japanese hot pot dish, has nothing to do with the lyrics or the meaning of the song; the word served the purpose only because it was short, catchy, recognizably Japanese, and more familiar to most English speakers.

A Newsweek columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew." About the song: "Ue o Muite Arukō" (上を向いて歩こう?, literally "[I] shall walk looking up") is a Japanese-language song that was performed by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto, and written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. It is best known under the alternative title "Sukiyaki" in English-speaking parts of the world. The song reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States in 1963, and was the only Japanese-language song to do so. In total it sold over 13 million copies internationally. The original Kyu Sakamoto recording also went to number eighteen on the R&B chart.[3] In addition, the single spent five weeks at number one on the Middle of the Road charts.

The recording was originally released in Japan by Toshiba in 1961. It topped the Popular Music Selling Record chart in the Japanese magazine Music Life for three months, and was ranked as the number one song of 1961 in Japan. Well-known English-language cover versions include a 1981 cover under the title "Sukiyaki" by A Taste of Honey and a 1995 cover by 4 P.M.. There is also an English language version with altogether different lyrics by Jewel Akens under the title "My First Lonely Night" recorded in 1966. There are many other language versions of the song as well. About Kyu Sakamoto: Kyu Sakamoto (坂本 九 Sakamoto Kyū?, born Hisashi Oshima (大島 九 Ōshima Hisashi?), 10 December 1941 -- 12 August 1985) was a Japanese singer and actor, best known outside of Japan for his international hit song "Sukiyaki", which was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies. It reached number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 in June 1963. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyu_Saka... Japan is more weird than admirable in my book. Dont get me wrong I like the traditional culture (is there anyone who doesnt love ninjas?) and their attitude when it comes to immigration. But there is also a lot of things I dislike about the country; they arent less decadent than we are, just in different ways.

Why do Japanese train drivers point at everything? Japanese train drivers must point at all important signs and warnings. This way they show that they have noticed it and are aware of it. Train safety in Japan is the best in the world, you can see here why. It can look a bit funny when seen for the first time. For a full story see: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2008... Genetists recently stated that the modern day Japanese are more than 90% Yayoi genetically while only 10% Jomon on average which there had been a displacement of the native peoples of Japan by the Japonic speaking peoples that had migrated most likely from the Korean peninsula.

Another genetic study (2019) estimated that modern Japanese (Yamato) share more than 90% of their genome with the Yayoi people and less than 10% with the Jomon.[26] A more recent study by Gakihari et al. 2019 estimates that modern Japanese people have on average about 92% Yayoi ancestry ancestry (with the remainder being from the Jomon) and cluster closely with other East Asians but are clearly distinct from the Ainu people.[27]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamato_people#Origin

It is estimated that Yayoi people mainly belonged to Haplogroup O-M176 (O1b2) (today ~36%), Haplogroup O-M122 (O2, formerly O3) (today ~23%) and Haplogroup O-M119 (O1) (today ~4%), which are typical for East- and Southeast-Asians.[18][19] Mitsuru Sakitani suggests that haplogroup O1b2, which is common in today Koreans, Japanese and some Manchu, and O1 are one of the carriers of Yangtze civilization. As the Yangtze civilization declined several tribes crossed westward and northerly, to the Shandong peninsula, the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese archipelago.[20] One study calls haplogroup O1b1 as a major Austroasiatic paternal lineage and the haplogroup O1b2 (of Koreans and Japanese) as a "para-Austroasiatic" paternal lineage.[21]

The modern Yamato people are predominantly descendants of the Yayoi people and closely related to other modern East Asians, particularly Koreans and Han Chinese.[22][23][24] It is estimated that the majority of Japanese people around Tokyo have about 12% Jōmon ancestry or less.[25] The general estimate for mainland Japanese is they have inherited less than 20% of the Jōmon genome.[26] A 2019 study by Takashi Gakuhari et al. suggests about 92% Yayoi ancestry on average.[27]

Giant Hubs Episode 3: A look behind the scenes of the world’s busiest station: Shinjuku Station! Five separate train lines, almost three thousand passengers per minute and trains arriving every second. How can the people behind the scenes of the world’s busiest station overcome a traffic load like this every day? The teams in this Giant Hub need a minute-by-minute precision, a constant control, a military discipline but at the same time always still a smile on their faces for the 3,6 million customers every day. At 4:30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOmskE5uTm4&t=270s) in the morning: The 200 doors to the world’s busiest station start to rise and they won´t close for the next twenty- one hours. This signals the start of the morning rush hour and requires a logistics process that is perfectly in sync. Nobody knows this kind of challenge as good as Hidehiko Moriyama, he is the station master of the biggest train company of the city. His team are the eyes and ears of the entire station. Cutting-edge technology allows them to keep an eye on everything from behind the scenes. When the day is almost over for some, another team is just about to start its shift. At night, everything happens at the same time. The teams work against the clock. The window in which there are no passengers or trains on the tracks is a mere three hours long. Repairs and work on the tracks must not disrupt the traffic flow under any circumstances. This would cause too much chaos. So, before the first guest arrives back in the morning, any sign of construction work disappears completely. It’s as if nothing had happened.

"Many of their customs are so distant, foreign, and far removed from our own that is difficult to believe that one can find such stark contrasts among us and people who are so civilized." In 1543 Portuguese traders and missionaries landed in Japan and started the Nanban Trade Period. For half a century, these missionaries and traders interacted with the Japanese, up until the early sixteenth century and the beginning of the isolationist policies of the Edo period. Here we have missionary Luis Frois describing some of the differences he saw between Europeans and the totally foreign Japanese - on subjects ranging from hairstyles to abortion. Taken from chapters 1, 2, 3 and 14 of the translation 'The First Europeans in Japan, 1585', translated, edited and annotated by Richard K Danford, Robin D Gill and Daniel T Reff and published by Routledge. Here we have something special - the Japanese perspective of the first Europeans in Japan. In 1543 two Portuguese traders - men "whose physical features differed" from the locals - arrived on a Chinese junk, with a gift that would change the course of Japanese history. Recorded for posterity by Nanpo Bushi half a century later, this account gives us the view of a people coming into contact with Europe for the first time. Why did Japanese people recite green as blue? And what are we staring at in the blue? I thought that I could also know about that part, I made this video

The reason for expressing green ones in blue is related to the fact that there were only four words expressing colors in ancient Japanese. In the Nara period and the Heian period, Japan has only four adjectives representing colors, "Whiteness", "Redness", "Blue", "Black", expressing all colors with the four words I had to do. For this reason, these four adjectives have a wider color range to express than the current "white", "red", "blue", "black", "blue" in the Nara period and the Heian period is the current green From words to purple and gray had become words. And even though it is green, to be exactly speaking, words such as "green apple", "blue juice", "blue clam", "blue caterpillar", "blue shiso", "blue onion", "vegetable", "lush green lily" What remains until now is the remnant when I was expressing green as blue. Therefore, the reason for expressing the green ones is because the adjective "blue" in the Nara period and the Heian era was also a word expressing green, so that remnant still remains. · In the Nara period and the Heian period, for example yellow was judged as red color and it was expressed in red. Since the meaning of "Akira" such as "bright" and "obviously" was included in the old red, words such as "others of red" (obviously others), "red shy" (obviously shame) Even now it exists.

Developed over the last 7,000 years, urushi or Japanese lacquer is made with toxic sap, powdered metals, bits of shell, and months or years of patient labor. Cultivated from the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum or formerly Rhus verniciflua)--a relative of poison oak--lacquer is extremely durable, is resistant to moisture, and has an incomparable natural gloss. It may be painted, carved, and molded; lending itself to a wide range of artistic expression.

The Honda e is probably the most fascinating EV without a Tesla badge. In fact it's probably more fascinating, because its design alone captured the attention and desire of legions of car enthusiasts who don't even bloody like electric cars. This 137 mile range Pokemon faced thing has a 35.5kWh battery pack which can be rapid charged in half an hour at 100kw. 0-62 takes 8.3 seconds with this 150hp launch edition car, but you will be able to option it with 134hp thereafter. On paper it almost loses in every respect to its plug-in peers, but there's a charm to the £27,000 e, and for some that's enough. Using the power of finance you'll be able to live with one from under £300 a month. Regardless of whether you give a toss about zero emission cars, there is no denying this kind of design is precisely what Honda does best. I hope they do more small, slightly-retro-but-not rear wheel drive cars in the near future. Oh, the power of dreams... Thanks for watching.

The 26th of February incident was a failed coup attempt by young Japanese army officers to try and bring about the restoration of the Showa. Despite their best efforts, their rebellion was crushed in 3 days, however in the days they operated, they did manage to kill many political opponents. NB! This translation is poetic and might not correlate perfectly with the Japanese lyrics.

Japanese lacquer is one of the most famous and amazing craftworks that one can enjoy or, better still, own. Most often delivered in a simple form like a bowl or a cup, Japanese lacquer is one of the most complex forms of craft, or shall we say art, that you can imagine. While Japan offers many “Lacquer” capitals, Wajima, located in Ishikawa prefecture, is very famous for the extreme complexity of its style of Japanese lacquer, and offers its very own type of lacquer also called Wajima Nuri. Depending of the craftsperson, or artist, creating a lacquer object like a bowl, a bento box or tea cup, can involve as many as 200 steps spanning anywhere from 2 to 5 years. It is thanks to the centuries of experience that Wajima Nuri quickly become a beacon of excellence in Japanese lacquer. In the small city of Wajima there are around 1,500 professionals dedicated to this art, as it is a central part of the city’s cultural heritage

Documentary on traditional Japanese forms of packaging for foods, confections and drinks which use natural materials—paper, straw, bamboo, rope, and wood. The original "eco-friendly" way things were done before modernization—nowadays everything is cloaked in 2-3 layers of cellophane and plastic. In Japanese with some English subtitles, but worth watching even if you can't understand the words. "Shizen" means Nature, you'll hear that one a lot. This was made from a VHS tape which was given to me by my packaging design instructor at the Sozosha College of Design in Osaka in the late 1990s.

The Japanese are still proud people (more or less) and they´re more collectivists then individuallists, which is good I think.
But Japan has lost his soul, there is only consumption/anime/anglicism and so on... nothing spirituel like the Bushido.
But they still have a better society then we in europe.

Sakura is a city located in Chiba prefecture. After filming Narita shrines I was planning to film here at sunset but because of multiple issues with old stabilizer I spent more time in Narita and came here after sunset.
I walked through dark alleys between JR Sakura and Keisei Sakura stations, visited a temple and a shrine.
Found two cats!

The music from the speaker in the beginning is Dvorak's "Going Home".

To be completely honest I never really "got" why conservatives loved Japanese culture so much until I visited the country myself last year. My impression beforehand was an extremely effeminate, over-sexualized, introverted, and soulless corporate culture but upon visiting it it was completely different than what I had in mind.

One of the few modern / developed countries where new buildings actually adhere to traditional architectural styles similar to Dresden, zero crime (my girlfriend was telling me how East Asia in general is the only area she feels safe walking alone at night in), a common courtesy among the people that made me feel incredibly at home and welcomed, and a generally hopeful and optimstic atmosphere with a culture that very clearly values beauty and sees itself as heading in the right direction. Social cohesion seemed higher from the people I was talking to there as well, most people agree on moral terms what is best for society.

Idk I was just pleasantly surprised by the whole thing.
