Failed bid haunts new German drive to ban far-right party
Germany is expected to decide this week whether to launch a fresh attempt to outlaw the neo-Nazi NPD party but there are fears the bid could backfire due to previous failures that have left authorities gun-shy.
On Wednesday, interior ministers of Germany's 16 federal states will vote on whether to back a new attempt to ban the National Democratic Party.
The following day, state leaders will take a final decision based on their ministers' guidance whether to take the case against the NPD to the Federal Constitutional Court, which holds sole power to strike down a political party.
