It really didn't have anything to do with him, he was just a someone who became morphed into a folk villain. For example, state control of the economy and socialism remained 'acceptable' after him, it was for some reason only one small part of his platform which became truly viewed as 'taboo'. Even this was distorted, black people from the US often remarked that they had a much easier and more pleasant time in Hitler's Germany than in the US.
