We need this thread. A couple I have seen recently :

Terminator 4 - 6/10 Disappointing. Christian Bale was good in American Psycho, he doesn't ruin this film either, it's rather the film that ruins him.

The Hangover - 9/10 Thumbs up. Those four characters who wake up after a night of drunken stupor have obviously a hard time remembering what did they do. And then a movie is out of this. You HAVE to watch it, especially for the Mike Tyson part when he drums "in the air tonight", from Phil Collins and punch one man. Best US comedy in a while.

The taking of Pelham 123 - 7/10 Good, nothing extraordinary though. It reminded me a lot of Die Hard 3. I guess they were inspired by this film. Decent playing from John Travolta and Denzel Washington.

I caught that in Finland, and it was kind of hilarious watching a typical Hollywood comedy with both Finnish and Swedish subtitles :D

It was hilarious, very silly, as usual, but totally worth it :thumb001:

yes we just saw this one too on Sunday! It was alright. I haven't read the books (just can't get into them) but I've seen all of the movies. Not that they are brilliant stories anymore (well the novelty has worn off for me I suppose) but it's like anything, I want to see it to the end and on the big screen! :D

It was pretty good, probably one of the better movies. I started reading the books but I stopped at the beginning of the 5th one. They aren't really anything special, but I suppose we all just really want to SEE how it ends. I dragged Ulf to this movie, he was somewhat pleasantly surprised, mostly because it was darker and scarier than the others. At least we both really enjoyed Dumbledore kicking zombie ass. :thumb001:

Ice Age 3. I still have a little one in the house, so I don't go to many movies at the theatre (two or three a year). And most of those are 'child-friendly' films. Moreover, I've never really enjoyed being pent-up with strangers, watching something that I can't control (volume, clarity, lighting, et cetera). I'd rather watch a good DVD at home.

As Octothorpe writes, I rarely go to the cinema, preferring to watch movies of interest at home.

Addio Africa (posted it somewhere). About the (let's just put it bluntly) the incredible level of barbarism of the African. Shot in 1964 at the height of decolonization and not polluted by left-wing political correctness. A very good film 8/10 (I am still feeling nauseated)

I saw The Hangover last weekend. I previously mentioned somewhere on the forum how it failed to make me laugh. :( By contrast Bruno made me a laugh a lot, simply because it was so silly. I hate comedies that don't make me laugh. :rolleyes2:

I saw G-Force (http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/gforce/) last night with the family. Even though the main characters were guinea pics (and a mole) it still managed to be multicultural as one of the guinea pigs was voiced by a Negro (and sounded like it) & another guinea pig was Latina.

I also saw the promo for "The Princess & the Frog" (http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog/)movie where the princess is a little colored girl, And the prince is named Naveen. It comes out in November.

Walt Disney will have a cow when they unfreeze him & he sees what has become of his company.

The Union: The Business of Marijuana.

Talks about how powerful interests are keeping pot illegal even though making it legal could be a huge source of government income and put dealers out of business. It also shows how hemp can be used to make all sorts of goods, and can also be a huge cash crop. Drug testing is basically used to target users of marijuana as harder drugs leave no trace in the system soon after ingestion. More than 50 million people in the US smoke marijuana. The film shows how pot is distributed accross borders, and how many people (all the players) that are needed in distribution operations.

Ben X. A Flemish film about a kid with Asperger's Syndrome who basically plays World of Warcraft and finds a g/f that is almost as batty as he is.

The film was awful. It was an insult to people with Asperger's. People with AS are not basket-cases lacking common sense. The film was preposterous and melodramatic. Bullies merely exist to beat this kid up all the time. He apparently can't talk for some strange reason. I can't blame him, if I had a mother like the one in that movie (Oh wait...:D) I'd be a basketcase too. At least my mother never spied on my emails.

Reflections In A Golden Eye

It has Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. It was directed by John Huston. Not to offend anyone who likes it, but I hated it. The film wash was golden, which was nauseating to look at, but it was horribly depressing and weird. An unfortunate waste of an evening to tell you the truth. But the Boyfriend had wanted to watch the Marlon Brando version of Mutiny On The Bounty, as we've watched the other two. There were no copies of the Marlon Brando version to be rented in any of our local video stores, and it wasn't for sale by itself, so we had ( ) to buy this boxed set of 5 Brando movies, and this was in there with it. *sigh* Tis crap. And, the 1935 version of Mutiny On The Bounty is still the best version in my mind.

I watched a wonderful film called The Last Winter. I expected it to be a snowy horror movie similar to John Carpenter's The Thing (which I also watched last night), but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was also and 'end of the world' movie that combined modern environmental ideas about climate change and the Old Norse imagery of Ragnarok. Although none of the Norse ideas were specifically mentioned, the imagery of ravens (often pairs) appearing just before or after horrific events, the idea of a "last winter" (finbulvinter), and the imagery of the wild hunt that was prevalent during all of the horrific sequences definitely stuck out to me. I give it two Heathen thumbs up.

Indeed. I was actually aghast. The only positive thing about the film was the actress playing Erica van Beusekom (Michiel's sister): Melody Klaver.

http://www.castingnieuws.nl/files/u_redactie2_21/Afbeelding_12_16.png

She is a really gifted actress and I am quite sure that we will hear more about her in the coming years after she matured a bit.
For the rest it was just a desperate attempt to portray a novel. Almost as bad as the "renowned" Dutch children's films that were shown in primary school during the 80's and 90's.

Yep! I'm thinking that it was Wes Craven that directed it. It was the director's first movie whoever he was, and it was done in the 70's. It was the same director for the original The Hills Have Eyes. Watch the original, it's really good! :thumb001:

Went to see whiteout a few nights ago. Accidentally went into the wrong theater at first and I found myself in a packed room of nothing but blacks. Apparently, I was in the theater for Madea. Needless to say, I was out of there quickly.

Whiteout was interesting at first when she was getting chased around the abandoned Antarctic camp by the murderer, but the ending was severely disappointing.

I just finished watching "50 Dead Men Walking"...Thank you so much Beornie. What an amazing movie. My niece's boyfriend is a Belfast boy, RC. This past summer, they travelled his home lands for a bit and he took my niece and my sister-in-law to that famous street in Belfast that looks like no man's land now (I forget the name now) with the towering 20 foot walls. The pictures are stark. My sister-in-law said that he had felt uneasy being there. I can't imagine the depth of feeling of people from either side when visiting this place.....

The Lion in Winter (the Patrick Stewart version):

It's Christmas of 1183, and Henry II (Patrick Stewart) must find a successor to his throne. He favours his youngest son John, while his wife, Eleanor, believes that their eldest son, Richard the Lionhearted, would make a better king. While their disagreement plunges the family into a deceitful war of wills, it becomes apparent that neither of their three conniving boys are qualified for the job. Director Andrei Konchalovsky remakes the 1968 classic in this sumptuous 2003 television production.

I've kind of given him a wide berth ever since I watched "Element of Crime".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Element_of_Crime

Usually I'm not too phased by films but something about this one made me uneasy. This sounds gay but I actually found it disturbing and don't see the point of going through this again.

Much better to kick back and relax to a comparatively normal Takashi Miike offering like Audition or Ichi the Killer! :D :thumb001:

I may have seen Gozu but am not 100% sure atm. Couple of months ago I started watching Tetsuo but didn't finish it. It just didn't appeal to me, same as with David Lynch's Eraser.

Takashi Miike and Beat Takeshi do the kind of movies I like though :)

Foul Play with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, along with Dudley Moore. The opening sequence with Goldie Hawn driving along Highway One is the California coast at it's most beautiful! :) There is also the funniest scene with Dudley Moore and Goldie Hawn that I have laughed my ass off over ever since I was a kid! :D Unfortunately there's not the original audio from the movie in this clip, but you'll get the idea! ;)

when i was barely two years old,
my maternal grand-father took me to the local theatorium
to watch his favorite movie-star
(forty-eight year-old gary cooper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Cooper))
romancing a twenty-three year-old patricia neal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Neal)
(just as he had been doing, in real life, for the past two years).

my grand-father walked the many miles along the creek
and down the dirt-road (which the county oiled every few years)
that led in to town
with me perched on his shoulders -
setting me on my feet
at the first human voice in the distance
with "Remember who you are. Set a good example."

it was only three blocks to the center of town
and a large glass (!) door
that opened in to a room larger than our barn!

this room was unnaturally cool
and was filled with the wonder-full aroma
of buttery popped-corn and calliopean music
and flashing colour-full lights.

my grand-father care-fully wrapped my two hands
around an ice-cold bottle of "cocola"
and opened the doors to a room
that was larger than a corn-field,
as tall as the sky and filled with more chairs
than there were people in the world.

like a magician,
my grand-father produced a mess of goobers
(a paper-bag of peanuts boiled in the shell) from home
which he proceeded to shell
and pop in to our bottle of "cocola".

we nibbled the hot-buttered popped-corn
and sipped the "cocola" and chewed peanuts
in the twilight as the chairs filled with more people
than i ever thought existed.

just as the caffeine and sugar penetrated the buffering dietary-fiber,
the huge room contracted in to absolute darkness
and exploded with sound and light:

intentional or not,
by exposing me to these giants
moving through fantastic spaces (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3068/2315644397_b42a24b42a.jpg)
while making grand gestures and speechifying (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?p=65435#post65435) -

http://media.wiley.com/lit_note_images/111/1.jpg (http://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/f/the-fountainhead/character-map)

my grand-father was shaping my life
(just as he had by his choice of reading material (http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?p=849035#post849035))
and giving it direction.

those archetypes became role-models
and standards by which others were to be measured.

discovering that ayn rand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayn_Rand)'s the fountainhead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fountainhead) was a book
in a tiny military-base library over-seas,
brought back all of the dazzling excitement
of that film-experience with my grand-father.

when i was gifted a dvd copy of the film (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1T4GZAZ_enUS281US281&q=the+fountainhead+dvd&aq=f&oq=&aqi=)
during my birth-day celebration, yesterday,
suddenly - i was back in that theatre
with my grand-father. http://www.theapricity.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.theapricity.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.theapricity.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.theapricity.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gifhttp://www.theapricity.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

If a plane load of Europeans were to crash land into a remote part of the Amazon and encounter the natives, would we be of much use to them? Even the pilot would be odds on for not faring any better.

Okay.. after Suut's suggestion I decided not to watch Valkyrie afterall... so since my boyfriend fell asleep I thought I'd watch something of quality (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1093908/) instead :D

It was horrible, actually. Why did I watch it? It was this scene (http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-sg&vid=a9f7d05e-5feb-413a-b519-6b860a39f74b) that lured me into it. :D

There is a 1943 movie named Flight for Freedom, which tells a fictionalized story of Earhart's career as an aviator and her disappearance. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I think this film suggests that Earhart was on a mission to spy on the Japanese for the US Government.

Dark Knight

Very impressed by this, a bit dubious at first because Michael Keaton will always be Bat Man for me (or rather Bruce Wayne) and Jack Nicholson is just excellent as the Joker but I thought this was something else. Heath Ledger played the Joker well, better for being dark rather than comic as Nicholson was.

Personally the winner for me was the psychological take on Bat Man, by any estimation not quite…normal, and only one step away from being the people he loathes. In Harvey Two Face you see what Bat Man very nearly is……

Of course the best thing is that the Joker wins, I love films where the bad guys win, so much more true to life…..

Transformers 2. I missed it at the theater and waited for 1080p release.

It was quite a spectacle, well produced, only one really slow bit, and enough humour to ensure it doesn't take itself seriously.

Michael Bay is very talented when he stays in his element.

The white ribbon

The White Ribbon is the story of a village in Protestant northern Germany in 1914, just before the First World War, as children and adolescents in a choir directed by the village schoolmaster, and their families: the Baron, the superintendent, pastor, doctor, midwife, peasants. Strange accidents occur and gradually assume the character of a ritual punishment.BE_ByB2ocVk
