someone asked me to make a thread about every day life in Austria. so i decided to adress this Topic.

Austria is a wealthy first world Country, with few unemployment rate etc. compared to countries like spain/greece who are also in european Union. Austria is a social Democracy. in Austria People usually work 5-6days a week and at Weekends go clubbing, partying etc. and become drunk. they have their Routine of work and Party.

i dont know the statistics but from my experience

austrians drink their first beer with 14
have sex their first time with 16-17
they are likely to divorce their marriage like every third couple
they love beer
they eat schnitzel (a Kind of meat)

Austria is rather racially "pure" without the foreigners like in Holland, France, England but in the last years a influx of foreigners cannot be denied, they increased in numbers.

what else do you want to know? ask me any question.

According to the 2001 census, Austrians constituted 91% of the population. Has the tide of immigration increased or decreased over the past decade?

The number of immigrants is constantly rising. Without immigration the population would decline but in fact is rising.
We have 8.460.390 inhabitants and this number is estimated to grow to about 10.000.000 in 2050. So my fear is that Austria will be overpopulated soon.

I also don`t share IMīs view that Austria is more or less immigrant free.
This may hold true for some rural areas in Upper Austria but in the industrial centers along the Danube there is a heavy influx of foreigners.

Thank you for your reply. I was also about to say the same thing, Austria does have large pockets of immigrants who make up important numbers. I've never been to Austria but i have relatives who live there and i know very well that there are big Turkish (including Kurds), Albanian and Yugoslavian communities, to name but a few.

It's probably on par with Switzerland, not only are the actual numbers similar but also the countries of origins - Turkey, Albania, former Yugoslavia and so forth.

Former Yugoslavians are the main immigrant group, Turks (esp. Kurds) are the 2nd biggest, the Albanian community is rather small

But as mentioned it differs from region to region.
So perhaps where IM lives there are hardly any foreigners, but they are heavily concentrated in Lower Austria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and esp. Vienna

Maybe because Austria is a smaller country...

No not really and Austria is also only partially an Alpine country, but traditional clothes and customs like Lederhosen and Tracht are gaining popularity again.

Thanks for the small correction - the Albanian-speakers should be from Kosovo then and most arrived when it was a part of Yugoslavia and therefore are counted as such on government forms and the like, i would have thought.

Arnold Schwarzenegger grew up in Thal near Graz.
I have never been there, but I think his first gym can be visited.
There are rumours he even broke in when it was closed in order to train.

He represents a typical Austrian both in phenotype and in attidute,
not in body constitution though

But just in the mountains. There is no special style of architecture, there are many. Visit Vienna, there you can see buildings with a lot of influences and and from different ages. Vienna is generally a beautiful city!

Like Grenzland mentioned it is as diverse as our population

It ranges from this in Alpine regions:

http://at.zooverresources.com/images/E170936L1B143724D0W400H299/Haus-Alpin.jpg

To this style in Lower Austria and Burgenland:

http://www.frauenprojekt.at/images/luna-haus-006.jpg

In some regions it is quite overlapping and unharmonious like in the North
of Lower Austria where you can find in the same village Alpine style and American style houses.

In towns it ranges from this:
