Professor Ali Fuat Bilkan, the general director of the Yunus Emre Institute, which aims to promote the Turkish language and culture around the world, has said that the demand from foreigners wanting to learn Turkish has increased in recent years.

Professor Bilkan stated that the increase in the demand to learn Turkish can be associated with Turkey's emergence as a regional power in recent years. Stating that Turkish has become a language that provides job opportunities in the Balkan and Middle Eastern countries, Bilkan further stated that elective courses offering Turkish language education may be included in official education curricula in Tunisia, Egypt, Albania and Jordan within a few years.

In parallel to multifaceted and rapidly growing bilateral relations between Turkey and countries around the world, the demand from foreigners to learn Turkish has been increasing. The Yunus Emre culture centers established in various countries devote themselves to meeting this demand as much as they possibly can.

There are 36 Yunus Emre culture centers around the world which promote the culture and language of Turkey and conduct initiatives to teach Turkish to students in elective courses in the countries in which they operate. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country where Turkish is taught as a second foreign elective language. Students can attend Turkish elective courses from the sixth grade to the 13th grade in the country. Course books titled "Let's Learn Turkish," which were prepared by the Yunus Emre culture centers, are used in schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The institute offers assistance in the form of providing teaching materials and training teachers for schools where Turkish is an elective course. Almost 50 Bosnian Turkish teachers were trained at the Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Center (TÖMER) in Turkey for a few months to teach Turkish to non-native speakers over the summer.

Students in Georgia can also learn Turkish. Georgia has recently added Turkish elective courses in its education curriculum and started to teach it in schools. In Georgia's capital city, Tbilisi, 395 students attend Turkish language elective courses in two primary schools.
