I’ve watched 3 documentaries on Dublin/ Irish pubs lately. Never been there but would love to go and drink a pint of the black stuff and enjoy the Irish hospitality. Anyways if anyones interested post a pick of Irish pubs (or stories of drunken Irish fun), if there not in Ireland post where there from.

Generally speaking very good. Cosy relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a pint, or if you're eating it's just as good. As a pub person, the Irish do pubs very well. They often hold events in these too apparently, although i've never been to an event - just been to a few while passing through places to be honest.

Went here when I was drunk many moons ago. Had fun and talked to an Englishman who supported BNP.

Fuck the Temple Bar and Dublin, full of Hen parties from Britain and wanker Australian bar tenders, anywhere on the West/Gaeltacht you will find the best and real Irish bars.

I used to work in an Irish pub (in Liverpool). They have a lot of character and charm. Some of the old Victorian pubs, here in England are just as good though.

I like real Irish pubs. The problem is that too many bars in the US slap a shamrock on the signage for their building and call themselves an Irish pub when they are really just a sports bar that has nothing to do with Irish culture.

Temple Bar is just where tourists go. Locals don't go to Temple Bar as it is very expensive. If people want to go to a pub that was frequented by WB Yeats then they should go to Toners in Bagot St. Anyway one thing Ireland has is plenty of great pubs. :)

Johnnie Fox's pub in the Dublin Mountains is one of the most famous. It is known as Ireland's highest pub and you can sit beside a turf fire. It is very popular though and has a lot of people.

The more traditional and older pubs would be found in the country areas.

The Roisin Dubh in Galway is where you go for live music and comedy acts.

Here's a good list of Irish pubs in this article from all over the country.

The oldest pub in Ireland (& in Europe and I'd make a good bet that it is the oldest in the world) is Sean's Bar in Athlone on the Co Roscommon side. It dates back to AD 900.

He had 3 sold out concerts at the RDS Arena in Dublin. People came from all over even places like Australia. Lots of news about him in the Irish media. He has legendary status in Ireland. He's very good mates with Shane MacGowan for years. Shane is not in the best of health these days.

Yes they love American musicians and comedians etc as do most of the rest of the world. Bruce Springsteen is loved here in Australia as well and when he came here it was a huge event and any tours are sold out.

Garth Brooks is super popular in Ireland and I don't think I've ever heard any of his music. Just reading now that Garth Brooks mother Colleen McElroy Carroll is of Irish ancestry so he has a connection to there also.

Garth Brook is a country musician that had huge crossover success in the 1990s, not unlike Kenny Rogers in the 1980s. I assume lots of country musicians are Ulster Scots. As for Australian groups, I like AC/DC.

Love AC/DC. They blocked off Fremantle last weekend for an AC/DC festival. Bon Scott lived in Fremantle for quite a few years. In the past I worked with a mother and daughter who were mad AC/DC fans. They went to their last concert in Perth in 2015 which was huge. There was about 80,000 people at it. Their concert Live at River Platt is incredible.

You're right that they were from the UK. That gives them super gnarly status and where I come from being old and gnarly is the ultimate compliment. Some believe Young's short stature is the result of growing up with contaminated pipes in Glasgow, very gnarly.

I don't think I could live anywhere else. This is where I'm used to living. I pass the Optus Stadium regularly as it isn't far from where I live now. It's lit up later in the evening with all different colours. Yes Fremantle is a nice area with quite expensive houses but not one of the more prestigious or really expensive areas. It is a port city so all the big ships dock there. They are trying to bring more people into the city because it has been a bit dead due to some not great decisions by the city council. Some government departments have moved there because of this reason.

Sorry for missing this response from a month ago. Perth looks like a beautiful location and seems very cosmopolitan in spite of its remote location. My friend from college lived there for a short bit and speaks well of it. Raves about Australian farmers markets. Same for a work colleague. I assume by city you mean the downtown? Is it a pretty suburban city overall?

I was speaking more of the suburbs around Fremantle. Fremantle itself is a city with lots of lovely older buildings and a great harbour. It is the first place in Australia that the migrant ships of the past used to dock and now where the big cruise liners dock and of course there is a lot of trade there. A great place for fish and chips and quite iconic is Cicerello's. Fremantle is where a lot of Italians went to live so there is still quite a few people of Italian descent there. It's got a great cappucino strip. Perth has much more modern buildings and is of course bigger.

A very popular hotel to go for a drink and a night out is the Esplanade. I used to go there in my younger years. :)

I also used to go a lot of Clancy's also.

Looks like a great place :thumb001: I love the mix of architecture and the Queen Anne influence. Seems very unspoiled too. I'm sure it's cleaner than CA

Yes both Perth and Fremantle are very clean. Fremantle also gets the cool breezes from the Fremantle Doctor in summer although there have been a few times when the Doctor doesn't arrive. :)

Do they have good Irish pubs like this in Australia? Unfortunately, so-called Irish pubs in America are often nothing more than sports bars and Irish in name only. San Francisco has the best and most authentic pubs by far on the west coast, everything else here is "fugazi".

No nothing like the ones in Ireland with the traditional Irish music. Some of the Irish pubs are not even owned by Irish or anyone with connections to Ireland. :) You have to go to Ireland for a real "Irish" pub.

This is fantastic. Dolan's Pub in Limerick. This is the traditional Irish session that you just don't get anywhere else.

I was in Salzburg and in Linz in Irish Pubs, dont know if the owners were actual Irish though or Austrians, i had a guiness, it was good, i liked the place... the atmosphere... i think in austria it is rather a "white place" didnt saw any arab or asian looking people or blacks....

Bygone days now. Dublin has lost some of the character it used to have. Difficult to keep with the changing times as Dublin is a lot less insular now. Ronnie Drew was a real character.
