A chartered Turkish Airlines (THY) plane was hit by lightning on Thursday night while flying to İzmir from İstanbul, causing a fire in one of its engines, but pilots were able to land the plane safely.
The plane, which was carrying 114 passengers, took off from İstanbul's Atatürk Airport on Thursday. After being hit by the lightning, one of the aircraft's engines burst into flames which could easily be seen from the ground.
Passengers panicked but neither the captain nor other crew provided information on the situation. Pilots successfully brought the plane down at İzmir's Adnan Menderes Airport.
After witnessing or hearing of the plane's burning engine, many friends and relatives of the passengers rushed to the airport.
