Figure out and/ or discuss how the missing figures look.

Not fond of these, I much prefer the ones with multiple choice answers, far easier.

1. A smiley face :)
2. Like the bottom left one but less space in the centre and a smaller diameter
3. I would say just a triangle and square in the far right row, other shapes are concealed, not sure if the square will have a line through it or not.
4. Pacman with his mouth facing south west
5. Black triangle facing downwards?
6. There is no vertical line (that would be through the centre of the circle/ semi circle, the quarter circle lines on the image two previous have folded into the semicircle or something, hard to describe but I can visualise it. It looks like half of a butterfly.
7. The figures combine to create a box with a star in it (an x and a +) although the vertical line in the top middle in the second figure overlaps with the a line in the same place in the third one, if we assume that this removes the line, and the objective is to complete this box with a star in the fourth figure should be the missing vertical line.
8. The same one that is on the far bottom left, I think, it looks like the figure is being created piece by piece like in hangman.
9. A white heart?
10. Another square, or another diagonal line, that would be required to complete a square from the lines already there?

My thoughts on the first 5...

1. A smiley face :)

Yep.

2. Like the bottom left one but less space in the centre and a smaller diameter

That, or maybe this:

...where the other one fits inside this one and the lines stop at the hole in the center of the smaller one, sort of like the other "set" of two. I think what you said makes more sense though.

3. I would say just a triangle and square in the far right row, other shapes are concealed, not sure if the square will have a line through it or not.

It should look like this, I think:

They move around in the path of their own shapes, so to speak.

4. Pacman with his mouth facing south east.

How do you get that? I was thinking this:

It's like this sequence: 0, 1, -1, 0, -2, -1 (i.e. +1, -2, +1, -2, etc.) visually represented. The missing chunk represents +1, the black represents negative, and it goes around in the circle counterclockwise.

5. Black triangle facing downwards?

I was thinking:

There are six separate boxes making up the rectangle in the center. The black triangles point at the corners and mean "there's a black square in this corner". One of the black triangles points to the top right (of which there is one corresponding box) and one points to the bottom left (of which there is one corresponding box). The rest of the box is the opposite color. The white triangles point to a row. There are two white triangles pointing to the left, just as there are two boxes with a white left row and a black right row. There's also a white triangle pointing up, and a corresponding box with a white top row and black bottom row. The odd man out is the box with the white bottom row and black top row, which corresponds to a white triangle pointing down. Hell, I don't really know for sure. :p

You stole my blueprints before you left me and you share them in public! You think these people here will help you figure out the missing pieces? It took 15 geniuses to build me. Your attempt is touching, obviously you miss the bot, but there will only ever be one bot. And no, the first one is not a smiley face. It's a duck face. Good luck figuring out the rest. You'll need lots of it.

PS. You're not getting back your cello until I get back my blueprints.

Hey, cool topic. I believe these figures are from http://www.iqpussel.se/da/index.htm (http://www.iqpussel.se/da/index.html), called "the eighteen". Is there a particular reason why you chose these ten?

I have no intuition about 4 and 5. I have an idea about 8, but I am not confident about it. I don't think I would have come up with the reasoning of Quasimodem for 4 and 5. Getting insight into the reasoning patterns of others is quite interesting. Anyway here are my solutions for the rest:

1. http://abload.de/img/1l2kp6.png

http://abload.de/img/2ctgjdx.png
2. I can think of multiple patterns as solution (like the ones the others have suggested), but I have just uploaded this one. If the figures at the top present the starting position and the figures below the end position, the observed pattern might be similar to that of a camera lense turning clockwise, but on the outside instead on the inside.

Anyway, has anybody tried the Culture Fair Numerical & Spatial Exam (CFNSE)? It is an untimed test with 24 questions and can be found at http://www.etienne.se/cfnse/.

The origin of these figures was a member-made logical puzzles' thread on the Swedish Mensa forum, I actually helped with these and I thought these particular ones where easy and fun enough for the forum. The were later published in Legatus Mensae.

I will give you the right answers in a PM.
