Turkey's possible membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) would be interesting, the U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Monday, Trend news agency reported referring to Hurriyet Daily News.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had recently said in a television interview that Turkey is seriously considering seeking membership in the SCO as an alternative at a time when the EU's future looks increasingly dim.

When asked during the State Department's weekly press briefing whether Nuland had any comment on the issue, she said it would be interesting. "I didn't see that comment by Erdoğan. Obviously, it would be interesting, given the fact that Turkey's also a NATO member. We'll have to see how that goes."

Biggest nightmare for EU. Turkish, Russo, Sino alliance would mean end of European influence.

Iran is not part of SCO, nor will it be.

Iran is an observer member of the SCO, which will obviously be pro-Iran in the event that a conflict escalates between America or Israel and Iran.

Either way, we can't join SCO for the coming years any way. NATO won't allow it. Most of our export is to Europe. Europe will opposite it. SCO plan is a long-term plan, maybe in 10 years or something. Iran problem will be settled by then.
