This thread is for Sicilian Apricity members to post their results from initial testing (23andMe, ftDNA, etc.) and all subsequent analyses (McDonald, Dodecad, Eurogenes, etc.). If you are partially Sicilian and would like to post here, please indicate your other ancestry!

I am 100% Sicilian and can trace all my ancestry to the small village of Alcara Li Fusi in the Nebrodi Mountains of Northeastern Sicily (to my great-great-great grandparents).

These are my original FamilyTreeDNA results:

Middle East: Bedouin, Bedouin South, Druze, Iranian, Jewish, Mozabite, Palestinian= 53.74% ±17.93%
Europe (Southern European): Sardinian, Tuscan= 46.26% ±17.93%

These are the results from Dr. McDonald's BGA Analysis.

This is the email he sent me:

The program says

Most likely fit is 35.9% (+- 9.1%) Europe (various subcontinents)
and 1.6% (+- 0.9%) Africa (various subcontinents)
and 62.5% (+- 8.9%) Mideast (various subcontinents)

The following are possible population sets and their fractions,
most likely at the top
Tuscan= 0.365 Ethiopia= 0.031 Cypriot= 0.603

which in fact is perfectly reasonable given what you say.

Without your saying what you are, I would have confidently
said "some Mediterranean Island". Your spot on the scatter plots
(I see far more of them than I send) is unique ... I've never
seen anything like it. Clearly it is Mediterranean. The reason
that it is unique is that you are from one village. An academic
study using methods identical to what generates the scatter plots
(principal component analysis) found huge differences
in Sicilian village 50 km apart! If I had been forced to guess
which island, I would have said Malta, which would not have been
a bad guess. Both Sicily and Malta end up on the map
(green spot) well to the east of Italy.

According to Dienekes Admixture Analysis I am:

34.8% Mediterranean
27.4% West_Asian
17.2% West_European
11.4% Southwest_Asian

1.5% East_European
1.1% East_African

My MtDNA haplogroup is U6a

I'm currently waiting for my upgrade results to find my subclades and then I will post their distribution!

My mtDNA results from FTDNA...

sgc2009 told me he had like 10 matches. On my map, I have almost 700.

My grandmother is 4'11", curly black hair, dark olive skin, dark brown eyes... she's as Sicilian as it gets, from a rural town in the middle of the island... and yet... full mitochondrial DNA match to all of these people according to FTDNA.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5828/hmap.png

It was her kit, so the whole "you're american/mixed/whatever" or whatever shit doesn't apply. The weird "Norman" stuff that started when I found out I was H2a2a1 never seems to end.

I'm not addressing this haplogroup in particular, because I haven't researched its subclades and their origins/distributions but I wanted to point out that there are many more Northern Europeans in familytreedna than any of the mediterranean groups, so you have to take this into account. Also notice your matches in Western Asia and Northwest Africa which shouldn't be ignored.

A good example to compare are the matches with the HVRI of my haplogroup which is U6a
http://www.theapricity.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=27670&d=1361079302

If I looked at this I might think that it is mainly a North European group, even though its a North African mtDNA haplogroup. One of the reason why there might not be North African matches is that there aren't enough North Africans in the system. There are tons of Northern Euros in the system so even if it is extremely rare among them I will get more matches with them (besides that some of them might be Ashkenazi). I'm getting an upgrade so we shall see what subclade mine is and be able to get more info about it.

I just found it really weird that a Swede would have far less matches than a Sicilian - and that most of nonna's matches would be in N. Europe.

I made two pie charts of the Y-Dna distribution of Sicily, based on Di Gaetano et al. (2009) and the Sicily DNA project on ftdna.

Comparison:

Wow, the results are very similar. Considering the massive amount of people (myself included) who are members of Sicily Project on FTDNA, I'd have to say that it proves that Di Gaetano's study is somewhat accurate.

J2 and R1b are always the most common y-dna in Sicilians, then E1b1b.

If you add up J1, J2, E1b1b, G, and T, you see that ~60% of Sicilian y-dna is of Neolithic West Asian origin.

Looks like the nobles imported their wives from Norman families in France, or were married already and brought them with them.

Interesting new update regarding my y-chromosome haplogroup (E-V12*)

I submitted my results to a moderator at haplozone and he made a phylogram with me and other participants from familytreedna. In there he has different clusters, described here (http://www.haplozone.net/e3b/project/cluster):

Since I have 37 snps currently on record, it is tentative, but based on my results so far I seem to be part of the G cluster (http://www.haplozone.net/e3b/project/cluster/75). All other current members of this cluster are Arabs from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Sudan. There are other clusters within E-V12 which seem to be Jewish or northwest-european dominated.

I am 188953 in blue.

H2a2a1 is not a Norman maternal lineage.
