I open it with two bedde canzuni siciliane.

Terra ca nun senti. You, land that won't listen.

Rosa Balistreri, la lejenna. One of the greatest voices to come from anywhere in Italy.

I'm not a huge fan of folk music, so I'll go with something a bit more contemporary. (Unfortunately, it's in Italian, but the artists are both Sicilian)

He died soon after this performance.

Modern Sicilian music in Sicilian is getting better but it still has a long way to go.. Part of the problem is that unlike in Naples where they largely strove to preserve a Neapolitan musical tradition, Sicily's has a big gap. I blame this on a number of reasons (external pressures from Italy and Italian media and internal pressures to "modernize" aka prescribe to Italian, American, etc. music)

Here's a new song that isnt too bad (except when she does the 'calling' part.. lol)

Yeah, a lot of Sicilian musicians (including Sicilian-Americans like Sinatra) have done songs in Neapolitan more than in Sicilian. It's a shame.

I completely agree! Even now there are Sicilian singers who have become part of the Neomelodica genre of modern Neapolitan music. At the same time I have to say that I love Neapolitan music. It's one of my favorite types of Italian music and there are a lot of great new music coming out of Naples.

Nuovi Briganti (New Robbers), they've been compared to Public Enemy. I don't know how fair that is, but like PE, their popularity waned after the mid 1990s.

A Sicilian-language parody of "Gangnam Style" called "Yum-Yum Style".

To be fair, it's six months old, so it's not that Sicilians are that behind in the times. I'm just posting it now.

It's very vulgar, from the point of view of a fictional Sicilian peasant.

^ I doubt this is really a Sicilian song, it has clearly Arab stocks. The folk band is called Al Qantarah and performs songs from the multiethnic medieval Sicily (Arab included) at the time of Frederick which ruled with a multiethnic court. That song in particular is took from the Arab repertory.

http://www.alqantarah.eu/Alqantarah_eng.htm

The ensemble Al Qantarah was created in 1990 to develop a project on Sicilian music, based on the comparison between the medieval repertoire and the oral tradition still alive, and which also includes Arabian and Middle Eastern Music repertoires.

http://www.alqantarah.eu/index_eng.htm

I wouldn't really use music from the (multiethnic) medieval period and classify it as "Sicilian". Better pick modern music.

Reason it was overlooked is because it's stereotypical, I think. But yeah, stereotypical or not, it belongs in a thread like this one. How to measure stereotypical Sicilian. If I - a non-Sicilian who barely knows anything about the island and its culture - know of it, then it's stereotypical. ;)

There is also an Andalusian and a Middle Eastern influence on this one, also. I gravitate toward anything "Moorish Spain" in vibe.

Another one from Frank Zappa

Zappa was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His mother, Rosemarie (née Collimore) was of Italian (Neapolitan and Sicilian) ancestry; his father, whose name was Anglicized to Francis Vincent Zappa, was an immigrant from Partinico, Sicily, with Greek and Arab ancestry
