Sicily has a very long tradition and history of poetry and recitation. The Sicilian school of poetry was a primary root that influenced mainland Italian Renaissance traditions and Dante's work (which later helped to shape the Italian language). I have read that Sicilian poetry and story-telling traditions take much from previous Southern French and Arabic traditions brought to the island among other influences.
