Racism is not just socialised there are deep subconscious psychological reasons for it. Surprisingly Freud didn't pay attention to this;

To put in layman's terms people are racist towards dark people, and this is the case in every single major world civilisation with a hierarchy existing -with lighter skinned people at the top and darker-skinned people at the bottom- including India, Europe and China, because their skin colour reminds us of dirt and faeces.

(NOTE: I don't necessarily share all these stereo-typical views above or agree with some research.)

I've admitted to this back at ABF, and it was off putting to some people... darker skin appears "dirty" to me. When I've been out doing yard work for a while, my skin appears darker, until I take a shower. I know that naturally darker people aren't filthy, but the association of darker skin = dirtier is still there.

I think it also has a lot to do with classism over the ages. The nobles weren't as tanned as the lower class working in the fields, and when I think of tanned people, white trash comes to mind

There's 2 factors at work. The first is our psychology and the second is socialised.

Upper-class East Asians have always tried to look light-skinned. It will be interesting if they start to tan on purpose. I was recently on holiday and all the Westerners were by the pool constantly while the Japanese tourists, covered in hats and clothes, didn't lie in the sun. I'd say if people start to make themselves look Asian it will be because of Asian popular culture eg J-Pop and Anime.

I am not buying this. I personally think Arabic men are the ugliest and stinkiest, though the women can be pretty, sometimes they also have weird faces, some African people are beautiful. Tupac Shukur was an extremely handsome man, however, in person I tend to be put off more from things like hair texture and scent than skin color.

In fact often what physically repulses me about another race is the way that they smell. Usually that primarily applies to sexual attraction, I can deal with most people as acquaintances having lived in various parts of the U.S.

I think we can smell extreme genetic dissimiliarity in the same way we can smell that our family is related to us (and therefore we feel safe but yet sexually repulsed due to extreme genetic similarity).

I think that just associating whites with racism is racist in itself. However, I never felt that comfortable with blacks. I didn't feel the same way towards other minorities though. Just blacks.
