I got haplogroup J1 (M-267) from ftDNA and I am Italian on my paternal side. I don't think im related to Bedouin Arabs at all :P

I need some help figuring out what it is and where it might have came from. If you would like to see screenshots of my results then just ask and I will post so you can help me further.

What help would you like? Download the raw data file of your genone from ftdna.

Start off with this site gedmatch.com

Upload your data file and run the ad-mix test and it can tell you your possible ancestry and more.

Also email Dr. McDonald your raw data file and he can tell you more. I've pm'ed you his email address.

You need to realise that your Y-DNA marker only makes up a tiny percentage of your autosomal DNA - it could be very ancient in your family.

There's some speculation on this forum..

It is found in Italy.

I'm going to assume it's from Jews. That's the only reasonable explanation. If it was from North African, then it would be an "E haplogroup".

Well it seems more Arabic than anything else.

J1

The lack of agreement of researchers cannot be denied with regard to the Date and Place of Origin of Haplotype J1. However, the usual suspect origin is from the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan)with two dispersion events toward North Africa and the Arabian Plate, regardless who does the research.

Possible time of origin: 18,200 Years Before Present
Possible place of origin: Southern Levant

Exactly my point. It's from the Levant where Arabic languages are spoken. Not North African. Lots of Jews have it. That's my point.

I'm sorry to double post. I also heard that it originated in Eastern Turkey near a place called "Van Lake" and is attributed to the Neolithic.

According to the Wikipedia page, "The Southern Levant is roughly encompassed by Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan and the southern part of Lebanon."

I'm guessing Jews were annexed to North Africa and then spread into Europe. Therefore being a dead ringer for Jews which would explain why a lot of them have it. To sum it up, it is Western Asian in origin just like it's brother J2.
