Familytree reduced test price to as low as 39USD.

Their results are reliable? I have been thinking about ordering a test kit for a while.
There are 3-5 labs doing same tests.

Which has the best accuracy in terms ancestry/ethnicity ? YDNA12 test is suitable for ethnicity ?

Yes. They are reliable. I believe the reason people think they are not, at times, is because some are surprised by their y-dna results. For particular reasons, I never expected mine to be what it is. At first, I thought they made a mistake. I subsequently upgraded my 12 markers, and each test confirmed the results of the first. Moreover, recently I tested with 23andMe. While they don't test your y-dna beyond a basic level, the results were the same as my first y-dna test. 12 markers probably won't give you detail, but it will give you an indication of your paternal heritage. For $39, why not?

Would Y-DNA12, take you beyond R-L21*?

Depend if one of your probable cousin will have taken the right SNP test .

If it could tell me my marker beyond that. It would be a good deal. If you can't afford 23andme, it's a nice wee bargain.
There's a big line too go down in R-L21

I don't recommend it. It's not as accurate and deep as SNP test.

It's good if you want to know your surname origin. In a Clannish way.

I am not familiar with R1b. For R1a, I started out as R1a, then, through further testing - including a deep clade test, I went from R1a to R1a1a, to M458, to L1029. From what I know R1b has been tested thoroughly and there are many subclades which have been identified.

12 marker is a too short string to get certain information about even a quarter of possible SNP's in most cases.
But it can be well supported with testing certain SNP'S alone (like: if you are an Italian and score R1b by 12 marker test, there is a high probability of being positive to SNP U152 - so you order this one etc.). I recommend it to the people who want to take a little risk of testing additional SNP'S and know more about themselves with a use of little money as a result..

I think its a good start, but you would probably need at least 37 markers to a get meaningful match if finding matches is important for you.

I'd recommend people to take the test, and later you can upgrade to 25, 37, 67 or 111 markers, they can store your dna sample so that in the future when/if you upgrade they already have the sample so there wont be postal costs (I think they have 2 labs though and certain upgrades might require you to pay a fee so they can transfer your sample to the other lab).

Considering that they want me to pay $39 just to test for one snp (and there are 3 that need to be tested), I'd say this offer is really good. But you have to factor in postage costs. How much extra would you pay for the postage?

Also this product only tests your y chromosome, which is your fathers fathers line. Whereas family finder on ftdna ($289) tests your autosomal dna and the $99 23andme kit test your ydna and mtdna (not to a great resolution admittedly) and your autosomal dna.
