DCRI threatens a sysop to delete a Wikipedia article
Wikimedia France strongly condemns pressure against a Wikipedia administrator by French homeland intelligence agency (DCRI)
The DCRI contacted in early March Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization which hosts Wikipedia, about an article published on the French-language Wikipedia, regarding a French military compound. The DCRI claimed that the article contained classified military information, and requested the immediate deletion of the article. Wikimedia Foundation, considering that they did not have enough information to evaluate their claim, refused their request.
Wikimedia Foundation often collaborates with public authorities following justice decisions. It receives hundreds of requests for deletions of articles every year, and cooperates with requests when those are clearly motivated.
Unhappy with this decision, the DCRI summoned a Wikipedia volunteer in their offices this Thurday 4, April, 2013; this volunteer was one of the persons who are given access to tools allowing to delete pages on the encyclopędia. This volunteer was constrained to delete the given article when he was in the DCRI offices, or he would have been immediately held in custody and then prosecuted, in spite of him explaining how Wikipedia works.
