Ötzi the Iceman could have used a dentist. The amazingly preserved Neolithic mummy found in the Italian Alps had tooth decay, gum disease and dental trauma, new research suggests.

The new findings, published Tuesday (April 9) in the European Journal of Oral Sciences, suggest that the Iceman mummy’s grain-heavy diet took a toll on his dental health.

“It’s surprising how bad condition he is in,” said study co-author Frank Ruhli, a paleopathologist at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. “We have the whole range of disease pathologies you can imagine.”

Ötzi is probably the most-studied Neolithic man in history. More than 5,000 years ago, the ancient iceman was hit by an arrow and bled to death on a glacier in the Alps between modern-day Austria and Italy. The glacier preserved his body until it was discovered by hikers in 1991.

Farming brought all the diseases even if he thrived on hunting.

In the final stages of life, Ötzi, the famed iceman likely suffered from brain damage, according to a new protein analysis on the famed frozen corpse.

In the final stages of life, Ötzi, the famed iceman likely suffered from brain damage, according to a new protein analysis on the famed frozen corpse.
A well-preserved natural mummy of a man who lived about 3,300 BC, Ötzi came to international attention when it was stumbled upon in 1991 by hikers on the Austrian-Italian border. Ötzi has long since been a subject of research, and apparently had less-than-perfect health, with prior studies indicating that Ötzi had bad breath, tooth decay and was predisposed to cardiovascular disease.

It was extremely tough living in those days. He also suffered from intestinal parasites as well:

Like nearly all non-industrial populations, Otzi probably had intestinal parasites; in his case, his colon contained whipworm eggs (4).

Also one of the Tarim mummies had a bad case of lice apparently. People way back then just lived with such afflictions.

Scan finds new tattoos on 5300-year-old Iceman

A new study has used advanced imaging techniques to identify previously unknown tattoos on the ribcage of the 5300-year old man known as Ötzi, bringing his total number of tattoos to 61.

Thanks to more than two decades of analysis, scientists arguably know more about Ötzi’s health and final days than those of any other ancient human. He died at around 45 years of age after being shot in the back with a stone-tipped arrow and bludgeoned.

Ötzi was tattooed, and offers the earliest direct evidence that tattooing was practiced in Europe by at least the Chalcolithic period. However, until now it has been difficult to conclusively catalog all of his marks. Ötzi’s epidermis naturally darkened from prolonged exposure to sub-zero temperatures as he lay beneath the glacier, and as a result some of his tattoos became faint or invisible to the naked eye. Consequently previous studies have identified between 47 and 60 tattoos on the Iceman’s body.

Not only does his death posture look like he was frozen in eternal pogo dance pose, he's got a set of teeth fit for a 70s Punk band frontman.

Sounds like he had a hard life already, then to get shot in the back in a frozen wasteland...unlucky.
