The opposition Socialists have proposed that the state should pay for every Hungarian student of public education to visit the memorial site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp once in their life.

The party has submitted a draft resolution to parliament to that effect. Its authors, deputy group leader Jozsef Tobias and lawmakers Ildiko Lendvai and Pal Steiner, have suggested funding for the project should be allocated on a bidding basis until 2015 and as a standard per-student subsidy from then on. The government should prepare legislation on the programme’s funding by June, the proposal said.

It is the responsibility and moral obligation of a nation to remember the Jewish victims who perished in the Holocaust and those who risked their lives to save them. It is the state’s responsibility to act with zero tolerance against the advocates of “vile ideas”, the proposal said.
