2 of the 3 Bulgarians I posted recently are from Samokov, Bulgaria. This man here is from there as well. I've noticed that part has good amount of light pigmented individuals.
Here's another example of someone from the same city.

Samokov (Bulgarian: Самоков) is a town in Sofia Province in the southwest of Bulgaria. It is situated in a kettle between the mountains Rila and Vitosha, 55 kilometres from the capital Sofia. Due to the suitable winter sports conditions, Samokov, together with the nearby resort Borovets, is a major tourist centre. It is thought that Samokov was founded in the 14th century as a mining settlement with the assistance of "Saxon" miners. It was first mentioned in 1455 and in Ottoman registers of 1477 as Vlaychov Samokov. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it grew into the greatest iron extraction centre in the region, with western travellers describing it as 'a fairly large city'. In 1565-1566, Samokov had to produce and deliver to Belgrade 20,000 horseshoes and 30,000 nails. Samokov also produced anchors and other materials for the shipyards of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, particularly Pomorie. As the logging industry was also well developed, in 1573 the people of Samokov had to deliver 300 beams as far as Mecca.

What do you think about this Bimo?

My paternal ancestry has been traced to Samokov, my grand-dad and his brothers were light-haired and blue-eyed as well.

As a whole Western Bulgarians are slightly lighter on average.

I think it all depends on where the Slavic invaders settled. I have noticed that alot of the lighter Bulgarians descend from Sofia and the surrounding cities nearby. They are usually more well off, and lighter pigmented compared to the poorer villagers. A city in Bulgaria that also has alot of light people is Troyan! and that's in central Bulgaria. The father of one of my dad's friends was from there and he was characteristically light pigmented and tall.

It also depends on how much a certain community was endogamous, as in cases where a settlement was surrounded by Muslims which made it more difficult to marry outsiders. Inbreeding is known to lighten populations.

Yeah the town of Troyan has one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Bulgaria and was subjugated by the Ottomans for awhile. Also the Troyan monastery was the center of the April Uprising against the Ottomans led by Vasil Levski. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Uprising So the people likely didn't breed with anyone else. Not to mention it's located in a mountainous area in a high elevation so contact with other outsiders during those times would of been minimal. I think everything I wrote makes sense.

Here's a family from Troyan that looks pretty white/inbred.
