Eduard Nalbandyan: Armenia expects certain steps from Hungary to regulate relations

YEREVAN, APRIL 17, ARMENPRESS: The Republic of Armenia is ready to regulate the relations with Hungary if the latter makes corresponding steps. This was reported by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Eduard Nalbandyan at the joint press conference held on April 17 with the Secretary General of the European Council Thorbjørn Jagland. “Armenia is always ready to normalize the relations with Hungary but in its turn Hungary should make corresponding steps”, - said Eduard Nalbandyan, according to Armenpress.

On February 19 2004 in Budapest Azerbaijani assassin Ramil Safarov, who axe-murdered Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan while sleeping, when they were participating in NATO English Language Courses in the capital of Hungary, was sentenced to life imprisonment without right to be pardoned for 30 years.

On August 31 2012 Safarov was extradited from Hungary to Azerbaijan and was pardoned by the President Ilham Aliyev. The murderer was advanced to mayor, provided with an apartment and granted «national hero». Armenia suspended diplomatic relations and all official ties with Hungary. This step of Azerbaijan emerged the criticism of the international community.

By the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia a working group was established on the international appeal against the pardoning of Safarov.

It's not like we are in any rush to have relations with Hungary. Both Hungary and Azerbaijan were put out to shame for their actions in front of the world.

Hungary’s relations with the United States have been seriously damaged by the repatriation of an Azerbaijani army officer jailed for axe-murdering an Armenian colleague in Budapest, according to a senior Hungarian government official.
Zsolt Nemeth, the state secretary at the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, acknowledged a “serious bilateral loss of confidence” with the U.S. in a Thursday interview with the “Nepszabadsag” daily cited by the Hungarian MTI news agency. That, he said, is the result of a “fundamental misunderstanding” between the two NATO allies.

A senior U.S. administration official told RFE/RL last week that the State Department is continuing to express “dismay and disappointment” with Ramil Safarov’s August 31 extradition from Hungary to Azerbaijan and his immediate pardoning by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon said Washington is “not satisfied” with official explanations given by Budapest and Baku.
