Romania’s wheat, maize exports down – prices up

Romania’s wheat exports dropped to 88 kmt in January 2013 – out of which 11 kmt were imported mainly from neighboring countries Hungary, Bulgaria and Republic of Moldova. The volume of exports was however rather small, compared to the 1.16 mmt of wheat exported in H2 last year [1.6mn gross export of wheat – not adjusted for imports]. The main country of destination in January was Iraq – with 52 kmt, followed by Turkey with 17 kmt.

Romania’s net exports of maize also decreased in January to 72 kmt [84 kmt in gross terms], compared to 302 kmt in Q4 last year.

Causes? Bad seasons? Lower demand by neighbours?
As far as I understand Romanian soil is quite fertile, so there shouldn't be this kind of problem in a world where food is increasingly rare.
