OTTAWA — The Conservative government is warning that if the Liberal opposition forces an election this fall it could jeopardize Canada's economic recovery by delaying thousands of infrastructure projects.

Transport Minister John Baird, who is responsible for infrastructure spending, used the cover of a press conference today on job creation to warn repeatedly that Canada's recovery could be put on hold if the country was forced to go the polls again.

It was a message directed as much to Liberals MPs holding a caucus retreat this week in Sudbury, where election readiness is expected to dominate the gathering.

"It would be irresponsible to interrupt our important work on the economy with an unnecessary election," Baird told reporters.
