Of the last decade's Miss Italy winners, three were from Sicily. Why? Because Italians recognize beauty. Even though Sicily has less than 10% of the Republic's population, we produce its most beautiful women. In fact, when Miriam Leone won Miss Italy in 2008, three of the last five finalists were Sicilians.

Here are the three gorgeous fģmmini siciliani who won Miss Italy in 2003, 2008, and 2012:

Certainly better than your Bulgarian women. Even Turks wouldn't rape them - they preferred Ukrainians, Poles, Albanians, Greeks, and Serbs for their harems.

The same reason why Michael Corleone's wife was said to look more Greek than Italian.

We Mediterraneans are all mixed together. Some just have better mixes than others.

It's interesting your reactions are never the same for light Iberians.

Because Iberians are much more genetically similar to Northern Europeans as a whole than Sicilians are, and thus it's less shocking to see a genuinely "Northern European" looking Iberian.

In terms of raw averages, according to most of the DNA calculators, Sicilians average 12% Northern European, one of the lowest scores in all of Europe. Iberians get like 35%. And my family is from the east, where there is probably even less Northern European than that average, and so I have even less reason to feel a connection to it.

Tell that to poor Eva Riccobono. She's harassed by people on Twitter who call her a Siculo-norman and even people the media doing the same. Her native Sicilian grandfather was said to be nicknamed "u tidiscu", meaning the German. It's no wonder her dad married a German woman.

There appears to be some kind of prejudice that exists against Northern European-looking people.

I've always been hesitant to allow myself to in any way ascribe to Nordic envy or the idea that we should praise people with Nordic looks.

I mean, we're Southern Europeans, let's be proud of that. We created European culture while Scandinavians and Germans lived in caves.

I have a test in my Arabic class tomorrow.. if I was speaking Arabic, I'd surely get an A on the test :D ;)

I value Norman contribution to Sicily but I think we must keep in context that, by and large, the genetic input is small in much of the island to the extent where, for someone from Messina, Enna, Catania, etc. a Norman looking individual is an outlier.

If I was Palermitan I may very well feel differently, though.

Again with the Northern European ancestry, you know why that is irrelevant.

We're darker than Iberians, but maybe a tiny bit more light-eyed. So calm down. http://dienekes.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/gwas-study-of-pigmentation-in-four.html

I mean, we're Southern Europeans, let's be proud of that. We created European culture while Scandinavians and Germans lived in caves.

Also, you don't have to feign an anti-Northern European attitude. This is no animosity at all. So why pretend there is?

The interesting thing with Palermo is blue eyed blonde people with Semitic features, and darker pigmented people who look Northern European.

An example of each that we posted. This woman has the pigmentation of a Norman and the features of a Levantine:

http://www.sicilymodels.com/public/332/01/380518_164646660302498_163091090458055_197075_5210 32483_n[1].jpg

while this woman has brown hair and eyes but would fit just fine in Norway otherwise and maybe even still:

Western Sicilians are probably the closest looking people to Ashkenazis and it makes sense given that both are naturally occurring groups that developed parallel to one another with similar inputs.

Israelite and Phoenician are both Canaanite.
Minor Greco-Roman input in both.
Normans in Sicily were not that dissimilar from people living near the Rhine, where Ashkenazis formed as an ethnicity and picked up their Northern European affinities.

But a convenient one, as well, as in the diaspora AJ's and Sicilians tend to get along very well due to shared Mediterranean heritage, a history of persecution, poverty and forced tribalism. Then, when they mix, you often can't even tell. You get girls like Leah Remini, who could be seen as a full-blooded Jewess or a full-blooded Sicilian with ease.

I think Remini looks mixed race and frankly neither Jewish nor Sicilian. Her sister, on the other hand, looks very Sicilian or Jewish and looks like their parents.

I would have used Lea Michele as an example. I could believe her as either 100% Sicilian or 100% Jewish.

I know a lot of Jewish people at school who look like they could easily be Sicilian.. some of them surprisingly so.

The women all along the eastern coast, and in Enna and Caltanissetta, tend to be the most beautiful.

People from Agrigento often have unharmonious features of different types (Armenoid, Berid, etc.) and Palermitans sometimes get the odd googly-eyed look that you see in some Ashkenazis (the Mark Zuckerberg, Barbra Streisand look) due to the Levantine and Norman mixture.. although those who look purely Norman or purely Levantine can be beautiful.

Alfieb, I agree with you. Some people on here like to exaggerate the Celticity of Spanish and Portuguese people. It is true that many Spanish and Portuguese (especially Portuguese and Northwest Spanish) have Celtic heritage/culture, but it's surely nowhere near 80% of the population. You're probably right about Spanish and Portuguese being mostly Atlanto-Med. From what I've seen, it looks like it.

You are also right about many Sicilians being able to fit in the Balkans while many cannot. Based on my personal experience, some look very Balkanian while others look completely opposite.

I wouldn't say you guys have more 'Middle Eastern' blood than other Italians. I think Calabrians and perhaps Lucanians would have more 'Middle Eastern' blood than Sicilians. Blondism rate in Calabria is much lower than NW Sicily (Norman influence). And plus, it I'm not mistaken the Middle Eastern blood among Sicilians and Southern Italians are mostly Levantine and some Anatolian, no Arabian whatsoever. While it's true that many Sicilians cannot fit in Continental Italy (excluding Calabria), some Northern Italians, even fully Northern can pass as Sicilian.

I don't see a correlation between Middle Eastern blood and dark eyes/hair. Calabrese people (other than the Arbereshe) are more or less biologically the same as ancient Greeks, before the arrival of Slavic and Turkic barbarians. You'll find more Berids, Arabids, and South Meds in Sicily than in Calabria or Lucania.

The public employee thing is an Italian problem. Even when I lived in Rome, they cautioned me not to send anything in the mail expecting it to be received overseas within a month or two. Why? Lazy government officials who can't be fired are everywhere.

The mafia is in Calabria, Campania and the rest of Italy now because the culture of corruption and ineptitude is an Italian phenomenon, not simply a Sicilian problem. Even the Albanian mafia is the same. They all see each-other as brethren.

You see, my dear, in the late, fiery death of the Kingdom of Italy, they were terrified that Sicily would leave, with American support. So, in their final days, the Kingdom of Italy gave us autonomy and said that we didn't have to pay taxes anymore. Indeed, Sicily's autonomy is constitutionally protected and stronger than that of the other autonomous regions, which gained their status later under the Republic.

Ergo, yeah, we take their money. No, we don't give much in return. It's part of the whole "bribed us to stay in their country" thing.

The Cassa del Mezzogiorno produced more harm than good to Sicily (and the South in general). I hope the new generations of Siciliani don't bow down to the evil that infects this island. I'm kinda optimistic: Sicilians (the young ones) do have a different mentality when compared to Calabresi.

The only savior for Italy is someone like Grillo, not the frocio in Palermo. But I don't desire for Italy to be saved, so whatever.

If Italy's corruption level was the same as Denmark's, the lowest corruption level in world rankings, would be a major blow to the Mafia, as the Mafia rely on paying public officials, it would make Italy greater economic power than what it is.

If they rid of those bastards, Italy would be a greater economic power than it currently is. Despite it's problems, Italy has one of the most advance economies in the world, but it could be even greater. Just posted in the economic thread, that it is 50 years ago this year built and introduced the first PC, the Olivetti 101. Also the second biggest aeropace manufacture in the UK is Italian owned, Westland Agusta. I think if people started post positive things like the last 2 examples than negative things about Italy, well it be better.

Let's say that Italians have a problem with being honest. They have good ideas, they're not as lazy as some people might think, and many of them are good looking. But they are so fucking dishonest. You can't trust anyone, seriously! Plus, the Leading Class. My fucking God! The most arrogant, incompetent bastards that walk on Earth. And the Italians FORGIVE these fuckers!?!

Yeah, it's totally not an East Coast name. It started in Agrigento and made its way to Malta and Palermo. Her family must have relocated to Catania. It's the economic hub of Sicily.

It's definitely along the southern coast where you find it, mostly. It's one of the most common in Agrigento.

Nah, it's just the Nordish ones that go to Rome and get famous, because the traditional Sicilian look [Maria Grazia Cuccinotta, etc] is boring to Italians. We don't have our own TV, film, music industries. You turn on a TV in Sicily and you see what Rome wants you to see, and the Sicilians that Rome wants to see.

Honestly, Maria Grazia is absolutely stunning. I've always had this notion in my head, since a child that Sicilian women represent beauty in Italy, no offense to other Italians girls, but that dark, med look with an amazing waist holding two slices of heaven is just.... ah.
