The vice-president of the Serb National Council (SNV) in Croatia, Aleksandar Milosevic, during his visit to the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad on Friday, called on Serb refugees from Croatia to vote in local elections in Croatia, scheduled for May 19.

"It is very important that all Serbs who have a residence in Croatia vote in the forthcoming local elections, because in that way the Serb community can obtain many rights on the local level," Milosevic told a press conference.

He recalled that under Croatian law, all ethnic minorities, including the Serbs, are entitled to participate in government at all levels.

Although there are several civic political parties in Croatia, our experience shows that only a Serb party will look after the interests of the Serbs, Milosevic said, claiming that the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) is the only true Serb political force in Croatia.

Commenting on the exercise of the right of the Serb minority to use its language and Cyrillic alphabet in Croatia, the SNV vice-president said that based on an agreement with the Croatian government, efforts would be made after the local elections to ensure full implementation of the laws regulating this issue.

"We have an agreement with the Croatian government, and if we could wait for so many years, we can wait for a few more months," Milosevic said, noting that "it would be bad if this became the main issue before the local elections."
Displaying Cyrillic signs in streets and squares, "especially in eastern Croatia, in Vukovar, would cause great disputes" and that is why it has been agreed to deal with this matter after the local elections, Milosevic said. He stressed that in his opinion this was "politically reasonable". (Hina)

Seems like a good initiative.
