The former chairman of the 1956 Greater Budapest Central Workers' Council died on Tuesday morning, in the 'Kékgolyó' Street Institute of Oncology in Budapest.
The Honorary President of the World Federation of Hungarians was born on March 17, 1933 in a ranch (Tanya) near Hódmezővásárhely. In 1947, he joined Standard Factory in Budapest as a tool maker. In 1956, he was elected to the company factory-workers' council. On November 16, 1956 he was elected into Great Budapest Central Workers' Council, of which he presided over until December 11 a total of 25 days.
After the Soviet army crashed the 1956 revolution he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment; he was released from jail in March 1963.
After the collapse of communism, he became active again. Between 1993-1994, he was the president of the '56 Association and from 2003 until his death he was the Honorary President of the World Federation of Hungarians.
In 1999, he was awarded with the 'Nagy Imre' plaque for his efforts to keep the memory of the revolution alive in the 1970s and 1980s.
Sándor Rácz was married with two children.
Jobbik expressed its sincere condolences to Sándor Rácz's grieving family. On behalf of the party Chairman Gábor Vona recalled that Sándor Rácz the President of Greater Budapest Central Workers' Council did not give up the fight for freedom even after the Soviets invaded the country. In 2005, Jobbik run him as a presidential candidate. His exemplary life is a political compass for the membership of the Jobbik party. Rest in the ineffable; writes Jobbik President Gábor Vona.
