A draft report by the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs rapporteur Rui Tavares on Tuesday proposed an EP mechanism in connection with Hungary.
According to the draft, there is a clear risk of a serious breach by Hungary of the common values referred to in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union.
Tavares, a Portuguese Green MEP, said the EP mechanism needs to be launched in case the replies from the Hungarian authorities to the his report’s recommendations do not comply with the requirements of Article 2.
The draft will need to be approved by the EP committee and then the EP plenary session to come into effect, so it is likely to go through several amendments.
