The government will launch a programme to promote births in the second half of the year, if the economic situation allows it, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at a Christian forum on Tuesday.

Addressing a meeting of the Association of Christian Intellectuals in Gyor (NW Hungary), he said: “the government would like to help young parents who were planning on having another child to be able to take this on.”

Orban said Hungary was perceived as the “black sheep of Europe” partly for its family-friendly policies, and the fact that its new constitution protects marriage and the family. He said the government stands firm on these issues and that this constitutional law was not targeted against anyone but was following a tradition of 4,000 years, which clearly declares that marriage is between a man and a woman.

He insisted that the family was the number one resource of any viable society, including that of Europe after the crisis.
