Children born to Hungarians who have recently emigrated will be included in statistics of the population of Hungary, under a bill passed by Parliament Monday night.

MPs amended the law on statistics so that babies born to ethnic Hungarian mothers abroad will be counted as Hungarians.

The law is necessary because many people who moved abroad in recent years have remained Hungarian citizens, and data must be collected on demographic developments abroad, Administration and Justice Minister Tibor Navracsics contended.

He said EU data obligations and recent domestic regulation justify the change.

“The goal is obvious: to cheat regarding the real numbers of the Hungarian population,” Socialist executive committee member Ildikó Borbély Bangó declared.
