Rival Anne Frank charities in dispute over archive

AMSTERDAM — Two organizations bearing Anne Frank's name are in a bitter dispute over the possession of the Frank family archive, in an echo of a court battle they fought in the 1990s over which one had the right to trademark the Holocaust victim's name.

The conflict between the Basel, Switzerland-based Anne Frank Fund and the Amsterdam, Netherlands-based Anne Frank Foundation is in part a struggle to control the late Jewish teen's legacy. But, with one side even comparing the other to Nazi Germany, it also threatens to damage both institutions' reputations.

"It's really sad this is happening," Foundation spokeswoman Maatje Mostart said Wednesday.

It's sad and funny at the same time to see how they quarrel about the right to trademark her name in order to be able to abuse her legacy. I wonder how Anne would have looked at it all and I think that she would have been disgusted. Having read her diary (compulsory reading in every Dutch primary and middle school) I can already imagine what she would have written.

I think the two rival charities should both see their rights revoked and be subjected to an inquiry into their dealings and I think that the government should pass a law granting the late Anne Frank Dutch citizenship (I think that, having read her diary and having seen in it what her feelings towards this country were, that it would have been one of her wishes).

I also feel that the Anne Frank House and similar sites of particular national heritage should be taken away from (the usually more expensive than their actual worth) the private foundations and that a new state-run foundation for National Treasures should be created and while we are doing that we could have the Royal Family donate all their domains within the Netherlands to a kind of Royal Trust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Trust_%28Belgium%29) (administered by the state and de-facto the homes become the property of the Dutch nation). They will be able to use the facilities but during their absence those properties will be open to public visits.

If we were to become a republic then the Royal Trust can be fused into with all the other domains and heritage sites that would be on the heritage list and become part of a National Trust.
