Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1095073/Scientists-discover-gene-makes-drinkers-violent.html): Scientists are closer to understanding why alcohol turns some people into violent yobs -while others are more likely to fall asleep at the bar.

Researchers have discovered a genetic mutation which increases aggression and impulsiveness in drinkers.

Dr Roope Tikkanen, one of the researchers from Helsinki University Central Hospital in Finland, said that alcoholism, alcohol consumption and violence were closely related.

'People react quite differently to acute alcohol exposure,' he said.

'Most individuals become relaxed and talkative, while some - particularly persons who are introverted while sober - become expansively extroverted and aggressive.'

Alcohol was found to increase the risk of impulsive violence among men born with a highly active version of a gene which produces the substance monoamine oxidase A, the researchers found.

Unusually high levels of this chemical are linked to depression and hyperactivity.

The mutation is less likely to trigger violence as people get older, the scientists said.

The findings, which come from a study of 174 men with histories of violence and alcohol abuse, could pave the way for new drugs to stop drinkers becoming abusive.

If I then take this drug, it will prohibit me to crash the emptied drink glasses to the floor ;).

I wouldn't say I become violent, but I certainly do become more outward and prone to speak more of my mind. I'm a terrible flirt and often find myself in trouble :D

I think the only time I ever got violent on alcohol was when I was walking back up Grange Road in St.Peter Port and I got the sudden urge to kick an oncoming taxi.

Funnily enough the driver didn't get out. Well, would you after seeing a man willing to go one on one with a car?!

Alcohol removes inhibitions, so I think anyone prone to a temper will find that amplified when they drink, not sure it`s down to genes though, seems they find a gene to excuse everything now. Trouble is, even if it is true, try suggesting "Great! Now we know what causes it, let`s stamp it out/manipulate it so it won`t work anymore" and you`ll raise mayhem. ;)
