In 1849, on the 15th of May, the Sicilian revolution of January 1848 (which caused similar liberal revolutions throughout all of Europe that year) was finally crushed by forces loyal to the Bourbon dynasty, and their Kingdom of the Two Sicilies based in Naples.
In 1946, on the 15th of May, facing the potential fears of Sicilian secession, the statute of autonomy became law, recognizing the Sicilian Region as unique and limiting the authority of the Kingdom of Italy over the region. A few more regions would later become autonomous under the Republic of Italy, but their autonomy is not as extensive.
