Bucharest has a significant role in enhancing the relations between Azerbaijan and NATO, and it is aimed at further development of this trend.

"Romania will continue to support development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO," Romanian ambassador in Baku Cristian Ciobanu said.

Addressing the conference “Emerging Challenges: Improving Energy Security in XXI Century” in Baku, the ambassador emphasized Azerbaijan’s active participation in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan.

Ciobanu also pointed to high level Azerbaijani-Romanian cooperation in political and energy spheres.

Energy security issues are of great importance for Azerbaijan and partner countries around the Black and Caspian seas. The region will continue to play an even more important role in ensuring the energy security of Europe, Ciobanu believes.

NATO Secretary General visiting Romania, to meet President and PM and give keynote speech at Bucharest University

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen (in picture) is to visit Bucharest tomorrow (May 24) and will be awarded an Honoris Causa Diploma during a ceremony at the Bucharest University. The Secretary General will hold the usual rounds of talks with Romania’s leaders, including President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Victor Ponta. Rasmussen will also meet Romania’s Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean and the Minister of Defence Mircea Dusa.

A joint press conference with President Basescu at the Cotroceni Palace is scheduled for 12:45 tomorrow and the NATO Secretary General will deliver a keynote speech at Bucharest University titled Why NATO’s door will remain open.

There has been much recent speculation in the Romanian media recently over the possibility that President Basescu is interested in going for NATO Secretary General position when his presidential mandate ends. It appears likely that questions on the president’s intentions will arise during tomorrow’s conference.

NATO chief welcomes Romania spending more on defence; thanks country for role in Afghanistan

BUCHAREST, Romania - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has welcomed a promise by Romania to increase spending on defence and has thanked the country for its role in alliance-led missions.

Fogh Rasmussen said NATO members should spend money on multinational initiatives "such as heavy transport planes and intelligence drones." Romania will spend 2 per cent of its GDP in defence by 2016, President Traian Basescu said Friday.

The two discussed the NATO mission in Afghanistan where Romania has 1,582 troops. "Afghan forces are increasingly capable, confident and in command. This year they will be taking the lead for security across the country as our troops shift from a combat role to a support role," Fogh Rasmussen said.

Cut the moral ascending crap. Who the f#ck are you to pass judgement on what Romania does or does not do !? Due to geopolitical reasons NATO was the obvious choice for Romania. Romania plays a dangerous game but has to follow its own interest.
