Here are my paternal grandfather's autosomal results from the GEDmatch calculators. After all he is the one who gave me my Y-chromosome haha :). I think he looks quite typical for a person with all of his ancestry from the Mediterranean. As far as I know he is of 100% Italian ancestry from the Calabria region. It is interesting to note that on the Eurogenes K36 PCA map that Graham created he lies a bit to the east and south of the other Southern Italians that are on the map. I think he may have a few rather different features in his DNA that pull him to the east and south compared to other Southern Italians. Anyways here are his results below. Does he look pretty typical for someone from Calabria I wonder?

Caucasus seems to be his dominant component, or something that signals Neolithic influence. Very interesting results. Seems typical Calabrese to me :)

Does he have a 23andme?

I find his Finnish and Northern European results to be rather odd. I wonder what it means?

I wanted to share with him.. can you send me his link so I can send a sharing invite?

His Middle Eastern is higher than either of the Calabrese I share with, one of which has none. He probably clusters near eastern Sicilians and probably not far from Cyprus.

Yes I think he looks very Eastern Mediterranean which I find quite interesting. What about his Finnish and Northern European scores from Ancestry Composition though? Where could they have come from? PS sending you a PM to share on 23andme. :)

Could be some Norman, or some ancient Indo-European strain (Balto-Slavic type of thing). It could also be related to the BaltoSlavic component in Greeks since they get some of those types of scores.

So his Finnish and Northern European scores then are not out of place really for someone from Calabria?

Sikeliot

Some eastern Sicilians get some Finnish. I think it's some sort of ancient Indo-European connection. It can't be Norman since Norman would come up "French and German".

Black Wolf

I think that Calabrians and Eastern Sicilians may be similar in many ways genetically. Y-DNA haplogroup frequencies I think are similar in both Calabria and Eastern Sicily.

They are the same people for the most part.

Can I post where he is on Global Similarity? he is right in the middle of the Sicilian cluster of the people I share with, between the Greeks and the Cypriots.

^Ya sure no problem awesome stuff! So based on all of this including his Ancestry Composition results would you say he looks pretty typical for someone from Calabria?

Sikeliot
05-25-2013, 04:04 AM
Well he is more Middle Eastern than the other Calabrese I share with but on global similarity he plots right where he should.. with Sicilians, between Greeks and Cypriots.

^Maybe some parts of Calabria are more Middle Eastern like genetically than other parts? His parents came from the town of Aprigliano in the province of Cosenza.

Sikeliot
05-25-2013, 04:10 AM
Cosenza is one of the least Greek parts of Calabria, for the record.

Black Wolf
05-25-2013, 04:11 AM
^But he does look quite similar to Greeks correct?

Sikeliot
05-25-2013, 04:12 AM
Yes.

Calabrese and nearly all Sicilians cluster in the space between Greeks and Cypriots. Slavic admixture in Greeks clearly has shifted them north, but what this shows is that all of these groups are primarily of Neolithic Near Eastern origin and have remained relatively unchanged. All of them are descended from similar original populations.

Black Wolf
05-25-2013, 04:15 AM
^So would you say then that he fits fine into Calabria genetically speaking?

Sikeliot
05-25-2013, 04:19 AM
Very much so. If he clustered anywhere other than in that large cluster in far southeastern Europe, I'd be shocked/concerned.

I am not surprised Cretan Greek is a particularly close match, since Sicilians cluster near them too. Your grandfather is basically close to both Sicilians and Cretans exactly as expected, then other Italians and Greeks, and then West Asians.

So it seems then that my grandfather may come from an area of Calabria that is like a genetic isolate of very ancient West Asian/Caucasus/Levantine ancestry.
