A border police unit arrested 30-year-old Liridon Kelmendi on Friday at the Montenegro-Kosovo crossing point at Kula, police said in a statement.

The police acted on a warrant issued by the Montenegrin basic court in the coastal town of Kotor, which had sentenced Kelmendi to jail after finding him guilty of "abuse of office", the statement said, without giving further information about the conviction.

“Following the arrest, Liridon Kelmendi was taken to the institute for the execution of criminal sanctions in Podgorica,” it said.

The detained man is one of the sons of Kosovo-born Naser Kelmendi, who holds Bosnian citizenship and is wanted by Sarajevo for large-scale drugs trafficking, but also runs businesses in Montenegro.

On May 5, Kosovo police arrested Naser Kelmendi, who is also accused by the Sarajevo authorities of attempted murder, but it is not yet clear if he will be extradited to Bosnia.

Following the elder Kelmendi’s arrest, Montenegro’s interior minister Rasko Konjevic said that the country’s police had passed on information about his suspected associates on April 24 after receiving a request from the Bosnian authorities.

However, he added that Montenegro wasn’t asked to take part in the arrest of the “controversial businessman”.

A 2008 report by the Bosnian State Investigative and Protection Agency described Naser Kelmendi as the head of one of the best-organised criminal groups in the region, allegedly smuggling drugs and cigarettes, trafficking in people and laundering money.
