The new Essalam Mosque in Rotterdam dominates the skyline and flaunts all architectural and social coventions. Eventhough it's a beautiful building it should not belong in this country. Other than the Jews who built their synagogues in a distinctively Dutch style and kept it as low-profile as possible the mosque seems to be a deliberate statement of architectural aggression.

The Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam is the largest synagogue in the Netherlands. Notably unremarkable from the outside - its interior is distinctively Dutch: dignified, well-kept but restrained.

Maybe the American churches remind you of mediaeval Dutch churches because the American churches are a rip-off of English and Dutch churches. ;)

The inside and the outside of an Armenian church are very sober, it has something very special, And old churches are mostly build in places which are difficult to reach.

It was original build as tribute to Andalusian Sufi man, Abu El-Abbas, on 1306. The mosque went through several maintenance and renewmwnt. But the most important contribution was by an Italian engineer named Mario Rossi in 1933.

Well, i am not an Architect, but Orthodox icons and cross tend to have a special design that distinguishes it from the other christian sects. this how Coptic Churches looks like.

The Greatest Church in the Orthodox world.

The Orthodox Church of Agia Sophia. Built by our great Emperor and Saint, Constantine II in his Holy City of Constantinople.

Those Arabic writings and little towers next to the Church do not belong there of course but the Church today is occupied by Turks... Most of the Icons are destroyed but the ones very high are not because they Turks could never destroy them, those who tried... died...

The Serbian Orthodox monastery Visoki Dečani. It was built between 1327 and 1335 by the Serbian medieval king, St. Stephen of Dečani, and was dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord. It is regarded as the largest and best preserved medieval monastery in Kosovo and Metohia. The founding charter of the monastery is dated 1330.
In 2004, UNESCO listed the monastery on the World Heritage List, citing its frescoes as "one of the most valued examples of the so-called Palaeologan renaissance in Byzantine painting" and "a valuable record of the life in the 14th century"

Panagia Sumela Monastery in Trapezounta, Pontos.

Built 1.200 meters high on the side of a cliff in 386 AD by two monks after they found an Icon of Panagia in the cave of the mountain. Today it still stands and has withstood countless Earthquakes that destroyed everything around it but left the Monastery standing without any effect.

Today it is one of the most known and famous Monasteries and stands as the pride of the Pontian people to have it in our lands.

A little more restrained in style but still just as dominant (the call to prayer can be heard all throughout) is this mosque in Amersfoort.

The Studenica monastery a 12th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery. The monastery's fortified walls encompass two churches: the Church of the Virgin, and the Church of the King, both of which were built using white marble. The monastery is best known for its collection of 13th- and 14th century Byzantine-style fresco paintings.
Studenica was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia, and in 1986 UNESCO included Studenica monastery on the list of World Heritage Sites.

I think so. That's something I would actually need to look up as I have heard they get funds from the Saudi's and from the state.

I know that the Armenian church in Almelo is financed by the all armenians in the netherlands, Although when a ''gemeente'' has a large amount of Muslims I can somehow understand why it is financed by the state.

Not me.. since Christian communities don't get any funding from the national government (Het Rijk) or the municipality (gemeente).

Well actually genum isnt ommelanden because it is frysian. It is a typical ''wierden'' village though because it ends with -um like 60% of the villages in northern Groningen. Characteristic of those wierden/terp villages are that the churches are build on the highest point of the village (hogeland) .

The Basiliek van de Heiligen Agatha en Barbara or Oudenbosch Basilica in Oudenbosch was build to commemorate the Brabant volunteers "zouaven" that fought in the Papal Army against the Italians. Built between 1867 and 1880 it was a clear symbol of Catholic emancipation.

One thing that I like about Dutch churches is their calm elegance: white washed or just stone walls, a wooden floor and ceiling. Nothing too flashy. This was a direct result of the Protestant Reformation and the Basilica at Oudenbosch was a clean break from it (after the Catholic Emancipation of 1853).

yeah how you would feel if the mekka temple with its cube is going to be converted into a church or monastery ?? There are clearly differences between some non important mosques and a major relique of a religion.

Dont care as long you did same to other religious buildings all over russia and balkans, others have rights to do same with your churches as well......its all about common respect. :thumb001:

It's the most beautifull mosque I've seen, small, art, something between orthodoxy and islam mosque.

Saint Biguri! Northwest part of FYROM, once albanian orthodox monastery now is slavic (one of the most beautiful in country, all in wood inside)

One of the oldest mosques in Egypt. It dates back to the Ayyubid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayyubid_dynasty) state in the middle ages.

Here is a Late-Gothic Manueline monastery located in Lisbon, Portugal.
Mosterio dos Jerónimos (Hieronymites).

The Tombs of the great one-eyed poet Luķs Vaz de Camões (http://video1.clubenet.net/rotas/imagens/large/img-7344-9783.jpg), flamboyant dramaturge Almeida Garret and distinct Explorer Vasco da Gama (http://video1.clubenet.net/rotas/imagens/large/img-7345-9784.jpg) are to be found inside the abbey, among other iconic figures.
To note, this is a UNESCO world heritage.
